Sky referred to the Competition Commission.

The Department of Trade and Industry has referred BSkyB's acquisition of a 17.9% stake in ITV to the Competition Commission.

The decision comes after a complaint from rival Virgin Media.

BSkyB, the owner of Sky News, bought the stake last November.

The move effectively blocked Virgin Media - previously NTL - from buying ITV.

Sky have released the following press release.

'Sky notes today's announcement by the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry. We look forward to engaging with the Competition Commission as the ongoing regulatory process enters its next phase.'

Re: Sky referred to the Competition Commission.

I can't say I am surprised that this has happened, Sky knew it would probably happen with they brought into ITV and the synic in me thinks they only did this to stop Virgin doing the same.
