Why will my sky go off while I'm waiting for a new HD card?

Can anyone advise me. I need a new sky card for my HD box as the old one is faulty. The customer service rep said that if he sent a new card out, I would lose my sky reception until the new card arrived but I could watch sky on my laptop, phone or ipad until it arrived.

As a pensioner, I don't have any of these gadgets (my daughter is posting this on her phone!)

is there no way to keep my sky viewing on while the card is being sent out, because I live on my own and it's company for me? I'm 80.

why can't they send me it then I'll ring to get it activated when I get it. A week of no service when I'm paying 100+ a month is not fair or acceptable.

I'm not sure why you are paying 100+ per month to Sky for a basic service if as your profile states your broadband (and I assume telephone) service is not with Sky. This does sound excessive.

When replacement viewing cards are issued Sky's systems automatically send a signal to block the original card. As the card is faulty this shouldn't matter as you will still be able to receive free to air channels from the BBC, ITV and some other suppliers.

I don't have sky broadband. I'm replying on behalf of my mother.

The house gets sky films and sport, and my late father used the broadband for his computing.

Mum is very upset that she will lose all her sky channels for up to 5 days as it's company for her when she's on her own. I feel that it's a pity they can't send an unactivated card out, then activate it when we ring up, so we don't lose service. With such an expensive service, and with a customer who's been with sky since 1992, you would expect them to look after their customers better.

After all, when they send a card update out, you don't lose service while its in the post!

venting just a little after a morning arguing with customer service reps!

A card update is different to replacing a faulty card.
What symptoms is the faulty card giving?
I would have assumed that if the card was faulty that the box would already refuse to play recordings or give access to Sky TV channels which would be no different to the card being deactivated.

      edit:
The only other way I could see round this problem would be to order Multiscreen then cancel the service after the viewing card arrives but before the install (making sure that the correct card is cancelled) but this may involve an upfront payment which would be refunded after the install is cancelled.

      Thanks for your advice.
The card seems to be faulty because every morning when we switch the sky box on we get an error message and have to take out and reinsert the card. Looking at it, there appear to be singe/ burn marks round the gold chip.

These marks are normal according to Sky. Have you tried a forced software update to see if this stops the message appearing?

The next time you need to remove the card to reset it try burnishing the gold contacts with a soft dry cloth then check whether the problem recurs the following day.
