      2TB box in standby mode.

I have been sitting here the last couple of hours playing on my iPad, the TV is off and the Sky box is in standby and not recording anything. I have noticed that every few minutes the Sky box spins up the hard drive, clonks around a bit as if something is being written to the drive, then after 2 or 3 minutes the drive spins down and all goes quiet again, and a few minutes later the cycle starts again! The box is set to Eco mode.
Is this behaviour normal?? If so surely it can't do the hard drive a lot of good spinning up and down like that all the time.
Aside from this strange behaviour the box is working fine
      Anyone else noticed this?

Re: 2TB box in standby mode.

I have seen some people comment that the STBs don't go completely silent but I am unsure what i happening.

There are some background tasks performed, such as downloading content for the Showcase section.

During the day the STB won't go into deep sleep. It is on;y at night when this happens. This is the only difference between Standby and Eco modes.

Cheers for the reply Scubbie! It's weird the way it is just for a minute or so then appears to completely shut down again, l will have to check to see if there is any internet activity at the time it happens. See if it is downloading.

Re: 2TB box in standby mode.

I think for this to happen now & again is quite normal.

The 4 boxes i'm regularly around will spin up for about 2 minutes quite often.
This usually happens on the hour (or 1 minute to, according to the box) in the same way as when choosing to ignore a reminder & it's in standby.

There was a thread or two on the forum a year or so ago, about a specific problem with the 2TB boxes' drives not 'parking' properly.
This caused the drive to stay almost permanently active though, as did a bug in one of the older firmwares which affected all types of +HD boxes.

I did read something once about the HD boxes caching EPG data on the drive, which may well explain the hourly start-ups i experience.
If yours is doing it constantly, although it may not be a problem, i wouldn't say it's normal.

Re: 2TB box in standby mode.

The updates/download will be over the air, not Internet.

There is a variety of content which Sky pumps via the Satellites now. They don't publicise the times, but the Showcase items are just one part of it.

There will be updates to your services (i.e. Buy & Keep was activated this week), AdSmart adverts will also be downloaded over the air and much more.

It could also be the disk doing automatic 'housekeeping', Sky's name for a disk defrag. I have noticed this on the later versions of Windows too, where the disk will suddenly spin up for no apparent reason.
