Exclamation Drx-890, possible fix for crashing boxs

      Hi,

After weeks of intermittent freezes, sluggishness of the epg, planner rebuilds,no listings, you name it..! I got fed up and
had a rummage round the innards of the box. All seemed fine except how hot the heatsink was on the big Broadcom IC on the top pcb.
So I replaced the stock heatsink with an old active northbridge cooler ( 12Volt) and some good thermal compound I had lying around, I was lucky that the original mounting clip fitted it perfectly.
The fan was too noisy at full speed so I added a zalman fanmate and slowed the fan down to kill the noise.

IMPORTANT! After you adjust the fan check that it starts ok after a minute or so with the box removed from the mains, if the fan doesn't start or struggles to start then just speed it up a little untill it reliably starts every time.

Please note that the fan is on all the time (even in standby mode) as I just connected it (via the fanmate) to the +12V and GND on the PSU molex connectors powering the HDD.
Depending on the fan type you could try connecting it to the +5V to see if it runs at a slower/quieter speed mine didn't hence the fanmate.

It's been 3 weeks since I did this mod and the box has been 100% reliable since.
Honestly, not one problem. (probably jinxed myself saying that..lol )

I've just got to remember to check/clean the cooler every so often!!..lol

Anyway, thought I would pass this on,

      hope this helps,

      Night...

P.S I could post photos / instructions if needed.
P.P.S No I cant..loved one wont let me take the box to bits again now its working fine...

EDIT... now 22nd December and box still working fine!! Active Cooler was definately a fix in my case.

Glad this has worked for you but would just like to point out for anyone else reading your post that this is unlikely to help with the lock-ups that have been occurring on older boxes (not Drx-890) after more than ten days continuous use.

Indeed, that's why the title says Drx-890.
