New Search features to roll out

Taken from this post over at pocket lint Sky has announced the new search features are finally rolling out over the coming months (Hoorah!)

Sky has announced a raft of improvements and changes for the way its Sky+HD boxes search for content. It will be rolling out the new features to customers over the "coming months" and asks that they ensure their devices are connected to the internet so the update can be applied.

The new features coming to the boxes' search functionality include suggestions as customers type in their search queries. As they type, shows, actors, events, channels or sports will appear depending on the letters already used.

Customers will also only have to search for the first part of a title, acronym, sport or event to get results, just in case they can't remember the name of the show or film. Even an actor's name will do.

And as results are from both Sky's On Demand service and its live TV broadcasts means that they can watch immediately or set a recording if they so desire.

Virgin Media TiVo customers will already be used to similar search functionality, as that was one of the key features of the cable service's premium set-top-box, but the lines are being blurred more and more as technologies are introduced over time.

By offering the update over the internet, Sky can also encourage its Sky+HD customers to connect - something it has been targeting lately, including the release of its first high-definition set-top-box with built-in Wi-Fi.

I don't think so, updates usually only go into the download stream after most of the roll out is complete. Why not try an update and see if its there yet?

Re: New Search features to roll out

As before, the update will be released to a gradually larger group of people over a period of weeks.

You will need to connect your STB to the Internet to really benefit from all the additional features, such as the improved search feature. If the STB isn't connected then it will default to the previous search feature.

The new search doesn't pick up the contents of the Planner like it used to. However that has also been improved significantly. Do give it a try by typing in the name of what you have recorded.

When connected on-line the list in the showcase menu now shows items which were intended to be downloaded to your STB as well as those which did get pushed out to it via the hidden channel. It also hide things which are not on your subscription. Should you pick some content from the Showcase section which is not on your STB, this will be downloaded for you to watch.

The third item in the list (Remote download using the Sky+ App) requires an update to the Sky+ App. This has yet to be released. I have no date on this update.

Sky Fibre Unlimited Pro: Connected at 80,000 kbps / 20,000 kbps
Previous ADSL2+ Speed 19999 kbps 1153 kbps, Line Attenuation 17.5 db 6.9 db, Noise Margin 7.5 dB 8.7 dB
      Speedtest: 17.15MB/s 0.97Mb/s Ping 31 ms

With respect to the third item (remote download) the update to the Sky+ App has now been released, however the new features have not yet been switched on. Sky say these will be switched on in the next couple of weeks and message will be displayed on the sky+ app when this has happened

Sorry for the delay in responding.

You do need to have R008 installed in your STB and connect your Sky+ app to your STB before you can use this service.

As for enabling the service, I am not sure about this.

R008 is available via the DR stream for the DRX890 boxes now. I did a forced upgrade earlier this week. Sky are also rolling out R008 for Samsung boxes as well now as I got that this week too.
