      Amstrad DRX895-C HDD Upgrade

      Hi,

      I have an Amstrad DRX895-C Sky+HD 1TB Sky box.

I am after upgrading the hard drive to give me more space, but I can't find any info on suitable hard drives that would work in the above model.

      Can anyone help.

      Thanks

Hi Airbus. Not an expert, but the WD 2TB EURS seems to work quite well. If you look at pH-Mb Software and Applications - pH-Mb you can see some of what people have tried. Generally I would say any 5400rpm drive would work with PVRs as they're lower power (and I've also seen them used in other PVRs (Personal video Recorders) and media systems). What needs to be watched for are setups which don't allow the drive to spin up until called by Windows (to save energy and give these drives their 'eco/green' creds) and how fast a SATA setting is used (newer drives will transfer at speeds something like 600Mb/sec (SATA 3) and thus too fast for the software on PVRs. But we do know that the WD EURE 'green' series drives work well with most of Sky's boxes.

Do you think this would work?

The EZRX range is a wonderful choice, provided that you are placing them in a NAS.

Stick to the WD AV-GP range: http://www.wdc.com/wdproducts/librar...879-701250.pdf

The 3TB drive won't work, but the others should be fine. If you can limit the speed to 3 Gb/s it would be better too.

Also download and run the Head parking tool available from the WD web site and adjust the parking delay to as long as possible.

      Why should this be done?

Also will be copying recording using ExPVR so don't know if doing the above would be possible?

It is possible as other users have testified although Western Digital do not recommend this. Sky HD 1TB upgrade question

Other members first complained about the noise from some drives and found this tool. Since then it has also been found on drives where the tool wasn't used, that they failed due to excessive head parking.

Whilst seawright is correct in stating that WD states that this tool should not be used with the current AV-GP drives, a thread somewhere on the WD site does say that it is fine to use it.

If you are unsure, please feel free to write to WD for an official answer.

So basically it makes the hard drive quieter? Any other advantages?

It may prevent premature hard drive failure, though how you could quantify this without a properly conducted trial I do not know.

The specs for the drives mention how many times the heads can be parked. The Sky+ HD STB's activity tends to allow frequent head parking on the default settings.

This is why some drives may fail sooner.
