      Diskless Mode

      Hi all,

I was using my 1TB box this morning and it froze when fast forwarding. When I restarted it, the planner would not appear. I checked the signal and both appear healthy, so I tried a planner rebuild. This produce the message "The Planner Cannot Be Rebuilt In Diskless Mode", which I suspect means HDD problems. I read some post from last year saying that software update had corrupted some boxes, so I decided to try a forced software download. I cannot however seem to get this to work.
The box is out of warranty, so looking for some pointers.

      Regards,

      Colin

This sound suspiciously like the HDD has failed

Aye, HDD right enough. Stuck replacement in and it's good to go.
Need to buy a permanent replacement drive, anyone had any joy with WD20EFRX?

      Re: Diskless Mode

Definitely DO NOT use the WD20EFRX in the Sky+ HD STB. It is designed for a different environment (NAS).

      Product List

If you scroll further down the list in the link above you will see the drives which are designed for the AV market. These are intended for, among other product, PVRs, which the Sky+ HD STB is.

It has also been found that you should run the parking tool from WD and set the heads to park after the longest interval. Otherwise the drive doesn't last a long time.

      Hi Scubbie,

I've looked at the Western Digital AV drives before, and compared the operating specs to the Red drives. I appreciated that the drives are designed for a NAS environment, but there are reports of less problems with "head parking noise".
Have you heard any specific reports of them not working functioning properly in a SKY+HD box?

      Re: Diskless Mode

I haven't heard of anyone using one of the Red drives in the Sky+ HD STB, so I can't provide confirmation in that form that they do or do not work. However some hints were made by someone within Sky when my own 2TB WD20EARS failed last year.

As for the noise, the parking tool I mentioned helps with this.

      Re: Diskless Mode

The drive is already hurtling towards me as we speak (got a good deal with next day delivery) so I'll either give it a go or send it back.
Looking at all the specs, I don't think it will damage the box itself. It just might not work very well.
Could be a useful if expensive experiment.
It was a WD AV-GP that came out of the box BTW.

      Re: Diskless Mode

      No problem.

BTW: I bought 2 WD20EARS at the same time. The other is still happily working in a friend's Samsung Sky+ HD STB. The drive gets a lot of usage.

      Re: Diskless Mode

I installed the WD20EFRX tonight, formatted with EXPVR.
Spins up fine, nice and silent. I'll give it a beating over the next few days to see how it copes.
I was hoping to get it installed on Friday but it was "delivered" by Yodel.....Grrrrrrrrrr.
I'll report back if there are any issues.

Providing the drive is fast enough to keep up with HD recording I'd have thought a drive designed for a "NAS" would actually be better as they will have hopefully designed it with the fact it's going to be running for long periods of time.

The only ones I really dislike is the "Green" drives but only because the firmware kept parking the heads excessively and they seemed to have a higher failure rate than the normal drives.
