DRX895 Fan Noise?
Hi,
My new DRX895 makes a very annoying flicking noise off and on which can be heard even when I am watching TV. I thought it was the HDD but when listening up close it sounds like it's the fan. It can be very quiet, just a slight whirring noise when I put my ear to it even when I am recording or playing a programme so I doubt it's the HDD. Then all of a sudden it makes this loud flicking sound which I can hear with the TV on. I have tried a planner rebuild as suggested elsewhere but it's still the same.
Does the fan run all the time or does it switch on and off when required? If the later, then it sounds as if it's the fan making the noise.

Re: DRX895 Fan Noise?
The fan should only run when the STB is getting too warm.
Have you left plenty of ventilation all the way around it? It may also be necessary to place a few beer mats underneath it to raise the STB a little if it is in a warm location.

Re: DRX895 Fan Noise?
Yes there is about 3 inches either side and 4 inches above. I unplugged the box and restarted it, I could hear the noise again as soon as I turned it back on. It would stop for a few seconds then start again then it eventually would cut off and stay quiet for a while until it started again. Funny thing is, before I unplugged it, I could feel the cold air coming out the left hand side but there was no noise. So it seems the fan was running almost silently at that point. Could it be something else that's making that noise? I don't think the HDD should sound like that.
I will give the beer mats a try!

Re: DRX895 Fan Noise?
If it is a clicking/tapping noise then it is the HDD. Not much you can do about it except try and silence it by putting something under the feet which may help a bit. Small squares of foam mat or thick cardboard as Scubbie suggests.
