Unhappy No surround sound using Sky HD

I have just had Sky HD installed this week after upgrading from Sky+.
I have a 46" Panasonic Plasma which receives Freesat etc. A Phillips surround system which worked fine with Sky+.
I have an optical lead fitted from the Sky box to the surround system.
I get SS when watching Freesat, Freeview or analogue.
When I switch on Sky HD the sound will only work through the TV?
I have tried a scart lead into Sky and that works with SS. It seems to be the HDMI cable which overrides the optical lead.
I have checked and re checked the settings in Sky / TV and tried everything (I think!)
I have tried the optical cable directly out of the TV, still no joy!
Does anybody out there have any ideas what I can do.

Re: No surround sound using Sky HD

I seem to remember its one or the other, and its enabled in one of the menus. When you turn on optical, the HDMI sound stops I think.

Mine was simple to setup and just worked,
Optical cable from back of sky to optical input on surround sound, go into sky menu and set the optical port to output "DOLBY D"

then set the surround sound to the D-IN input (or whatever your optical input name is) and you should hear sound.
If not try going into the tv menu and setting the speakers to mute.

You can also tell if theres a signal going down the optical cable from sky, if you pull the end out of the surround sound but leave the sky end connected you should have a red beam of light at the end of the cable.

There shouldn't be a problem with your setup, but I have read of various problems with certain makes of surround sound/amplifier with Sky HD, and also some optical cables that just 'don't work' until they have been replaced. Don't ask me why, I'm just telling you what's reported elsewhere!

I've got my Home Cinema System hooked up with optical out from the Sky box, and the usual HDMI from Sky to the tv. There is no conflict. Sky Sound Settings are :

Audio Output - Stereo
Digital Audio Output - Dolby D

I use D-IN on the surround system as the audio input. Make sure you're using the correct audio source on your Philips.

No idea what your problem could be, except try changing Digital Audio Output to 'Normal' to see if anything's coming through, or try another cable. It could be a problem with the digibox's optical out. I assume you can see the 'red light' at the digibox and also at the end of the optical cable?

Donaldson2121. Sorry mate. Just saw your post as well.

Re: No surround sound using Sky HD

Hi kenedin are you getting dts hd/dolby true hd through your surroud sound system? or is by connecting through opitical out you don't get these formats just forced surround sound.
Would like to know before i purchase tele/blueray/surround.
Is there a tele with built in dolby hd s.s. that can use the the hdmi out of the sky box?
Can a usb connection on sky be utilised to carry hd signal?
cheers

Re: No surround sound using Sky HD

Theres no Dolby HD audio from Sky, its DD 5.1 at best, at the moment. This is only available as a HDMI output and Optical as far as I know.

Re: No surround sound using Sky HD

I have a similar set up and achieve output on both HDMI to telly (a Sammy LE40A856) and an optical TOSlink cable to my old faithful Yamaha amp and wharfedale speakers for a DD 5.1 output.

I can have either one running or both.

Services > Settings > Sound is the menu path you can fiddle with the settings here.
