Sky News HD - coming next Spring

We hope you’re enjoying your Sky+HD service. As you know, we’re always looking at ways we can add to the choice of HD content and do something new. We’re delighted to tell you today that we’ll be doing both next year by launching Sky News HD, the first UK HD news channel in Spring 2010.

We tried out news in HD for the very first time in January, when Sky News covered Barack Obama’s inauguration. Comments from Sky customers on the forums helped to convince us that there was real potential and demand for new in HD and spurred us on to looking at the possibility of launching a fully-fledged Sky News HD channel. Now that we’ve decided to do just that, we need to upgrade our news studios and equipment, here and overseas – quite a job for a broadcast news organisation.

This week, we’ve also upped the ante on arts, moving just this Monday to two dedicated simulcast HD channels for Sky Arts 1 and Sky Arts 2. This means that, today, Sky+HD customers can enjoy content from films, sport, documentaries, entertainment and arts across 33 channels.
As always, thanks for your comments and feedback – it’s invaluable to us.

      Thanks

      The Sky+HD Team

Excellent, and hopefully you'll be aware of the impact of "blood and gore" in HD in news pictures, and adjust the coverage accordingly ?

Great. The more HD channels the better. Do you think this will include Sky Sports News at some point? I still find it a bit odd that you can get Sky Sports news for free on Freeview and yet you have to pay extra for it if you are a Sky subscriber ???

Spring 2010. Great. A year's advance notice? They've got too much time on their hands.

Take a look at C4 7pm News to see what to expect. Studio in HD and feeds in various (often NTSC) formats. Don't expect 100% HD!

Who watches Sky news anyway? It's just like The Sun newspaper, but on the telly.

My mate works for ITN, who supply news to C4, and he says that the C4 news studio being in HD is news to him ! As far as he's aware, they don't even have an HD camera !

I would love it if livingtv/livingtv2/Virgin1, had their own HD version channels, as i'm sure shows like ghostwhisperer, maybe old star trek tng/ds9/voyager episodes would look better in hd, and in proper aspect ratio.
