HD Box- removal of top circuit board.

Good afternoon, happy new year, apologies for my first post being a question!

I've got a problem with my Thompson HD box- uncontrollable scrolling through channels, not controller related- and I believe it may be being caused by the top buttons on the the box. It's got to the stage where I'm going to replace the box because of this, and I'm entirely out of warranty so I thought before I do, I may as well take the top off and have a look.

My question is, can I simply disconnect the top circuit board with the buttons on it? If I do so will the box continue to function?

If I do decide to disconnect it, what's the best way to do so? Cut the ribbon? Break solders at the top circuit board end, or the other end? Any other ideas?

Apologies for verbosity, many thanks for any suggestions.

Does it work with the lid off? Just in case the lid is sticking the buttons down?

Re: HD Box- removal of top circuit board.

My first thought too! I have reconnected without the case on and it worked, for about five minutes and started the uncontrollable channel scrolling once again.

Some further context: It first did this in august, and after lots of unplugging and replugging in it stopped. Then did it again a few months later, and after much button pressing unplugging replugging it went again. Then did it every few weeks, every few days, and now, it seems pretty much constantly.

I am pretty sure if you ring Sky they would charge you £65 to come out and swap it for a refurbed unit. Maybe worth all the non hassle and you would get a 3 month warranty.

Re: HD Box- removal of top circuit board.

With the outer case removed, unscrew the circuit board and move it away from the top cover, now power up the box and see if the fault has gone. If it has then check to make sure there is no damage on the print side of the board and apply some thin strips of insulation tape where the board meets the supports from the top cover.

Not that one, sadly.

Re: HD Box- removal of top circuit board.

Shame, you could just check that one of the switches on the board is not jammed in, and that the solder looks o.k, apart from that it looks like the easy way out is a new box And remember, whenever you have a problem like this, always remove the batteries from the remote!! you never know, it might be that playing up

Re: HD Box- removal of top circuit board.

Indeed, I think it will be. Sadly not the controller, either.

I assume doing as I suggested in the original post, and simply snipping the ribbon cable to the circuit board (Given that I don't use the set top buttons at all) will fubar it?

Re: HD Box- removal of top circuit board.

I have never tried that, but I suspect if the fault is not there it would have no effect.
