2 months in and 2nd HD box has gone south.

I got my HD box in June and hooray I could have glorious HD. When the box got to 50% full I started to have a lot of FAILED recordings and after 3-4 weeks of that I phoned SKY up to see if we could get an engineer out.
After a week of umming and ahhing Sky sent out an engineer and replaced the box as there was a hard disc fault.

That was 2 weeks ago, and now the new HD box has got to 40% full and the hard disc on this one has started doing it all over again.

Has anybody else had a problem with the hard drives on the HD boxes as they way it's going I shan't be able to get anything viewed on them as they wll be constantly failing the recordings.

I just wondered if there is a way of doing a disc scan like a PC and map out dodgy parts of the hard drive as having to constantly phone up Sky is getting really annoying.

Currently if you try and record past 40% full it gives a recording failed with a Technical fault no 9 on the information bit. So I can probably record about 8 hours of HD TV so no HD film fests for me atm.

I am going to hazard a guess and say it is a Thomson. Since all Sky HD boxes are currently made by them.

Re: 2 months in and 2nd HD box has gone south.

In another thread somebody said that it was possible to reformat the hard drive and I wondered how it was possible to do that as now I have had all of my stuff I was recording tonight fail and that was with the disc only being 6% full.

I really don't want all the hassle of trying to get another one out of Sky because I can't see it happening.

Re: 2 months in and 2nd HD box has gone south.

You can reformat the hard drive on any Sky+ or Sky HD box as follows.....

On the remote, press Services, 4, 0, 1, Select in quick succession. Do this on the remote - don't try to do it via menus, because the options won't be there.

You will then be in the engineer's menu (change this stuff at your peril !)

      Then choose "Full System Reset".

The system will reformat the drive, and you will lose everything on the drive already recorded. Make a note of the recordings and series links you have set up, because you could lose them too.

When the format finishes, the box will automatically re-boot, and your drive will be reformatted, and empty.

Can anyone confirm that doing the above Format works with the failed recording problem? I'm getting the problem on my Amstrad sky+ box when over maybe 40% full.
