Switch from o2 to Sky - Speed 36% speed DROP!!!

Dear forum,

I recently switched my Broadband provider to sky from another (o2). The sky connection is fine and works prefectly. However, line testing is completed on my account and I get a connection speed of 12284 d/l and 1002 u/l. I realise that this is within the quoted figures of "10-20Mb" that sky told me.

I was previously VERY happy with my o2 download speed of 19Mb/s! Brilliant since I live about 0.5Km from the telephone exchange, this was to be expected. I figured (perhaps wrongly) that if I switched to sky (to save money as a sky tv customer) then it would be reasonable to expect the same if not similar speed on my sky broadband. But alas, after line speed testing completed today, they have decided that the maximum speed my line will support is 12.2Mb - my question is WHY???

I have the same wiring in my flat, the same wiring to my (new) router, the same telephone line and I am surprisingly the same distance from the exchange.

Can anyone explain this? I have written to sky tech. support and await a reply....

Many thanks.

md_moore

Re: Switch from o2 to Sky - Speed 36% speed DROP!!!

Your right with an attenuation of 17.0 you can probably nearly see your exchange. My attenuation is similar to yours and i currently get the max 16Mb until sky let me loose with the new speeds.

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 16383 kbps 765 kbps
Line Attenuation 18.0 db 8.1 db
Noise Margin 13.1 db 12.5 db

Your noise margin is almost at the sky standard 6.9 so wont allow you to sync any quicker. Are those stats from your test socket? If not can you post them with the router connected to it?

Hi,
No they are from the main socket but not the test plate behind it. I didn't see the need to try that since I got such a good speed in exactly the same socket with o2....I'll try the test socket and paste it here.

Hi Marcus,

Thank you for contacting Sky Help Centre.
Upon checking your line I reconfigured your speeds.
Your new speeds are as follows.

Port Status Up
Trained In Download Speed 18042 Kbps
Trained In Upload Speed 984 Kbps
Configured Download Speed 20480 Kbps
Configured Upload Speed 1312 Kbps
Max Attainable Rate Down 20216 Kbps

Please continue to monitor your speeds over the next 72hours.
To check the speed that you are currently receiving please use the following steps:-
Open a new browser
Type 192.168.0.1 into the address bar
The Username is admin
The Password is sky
At the bottom of this page click on Show Statistics
In the new pop-up screen it will show you your current connection speed. It will be labelled Downstream Speed
The speed shown is in Kbps. To get an approximation of your speed in Mbps just divide the number by 1000 (i.e. 7642Kbps becomes 7.6Mbps approx).

I hope this information has helped with your enquiry. If you require any further assistance, you can respond to my email.
You can also contact our Customer Services team on 08442 41 41 41, where one of our advisors will be happy to help.

Kind regards
Sean
