Happy update - ecstatic!

I posted some time ago to say I was getting some odd results with Speedtest ie.speeds of up to 20Mbps occasionally. Over the past week I have been getting these speeds consistently. My connection went down about 3 weeks ago and Sky told me that there was some work being done at the local exchange.

Since then - wow! I don't know what they did but I'm sure glad they did it. A couple of Speedtest links below.

Perhaps some kind soul would tell me how to attach the images properly.

Router stats:
Connection Speed 11937 kbps 766 kbps
Line Attenuation 35.5 db 18.7 db
Noise Margin 7.5 db 10.5 db

Anybody here know what's going on?

PS. Don't tell Rupert, it might all be a mistake.

Re: Happy update - ecstatic!

Sorry to disappoint you but with a router sync of 11937kbps it is just not possible to get a throughput of 20meg. With transmission overheads you should be seeing ~9600kbps i.e a little under half the speed you think you're getting.

Speedtest.net is rather poor at giving accurate or consistent speed measures. Try Skyuser's - it is generally pretty reliable.

Re: Happy update - ecstatic!

I just done a speed test on sky user and it says

Your download speed is 12320Kbps. That is 8025Kbps above the average for Sky
Your upload speed is 628Kbps. That is 228Kbps above the average for Sky

Re: Happy update - ecstatic!

Try a 'real world' test, go Here and download XP Sp2, this is a high speed server and will give you an idea of your actual speed. Post the time it takes

Re: Happy update - ecstatic!

I just done the skyuser speed test and it seems to be pretty accurate:

Your download speed is 18344Kbps. That is 15043Kbps above the average for Virgin
Your upload speed is 675Kbps. That is 335Kbps above the average for Virgin

Re: Happy update - ecstatic!

Thanks for the various comments/explanations - I was wondering what was happening.

However, even if Speedtest is not 100% accurate, the fact remains that, comparing like with like, ie. Speedtest from 4-5 weeks ago (8 to 12Mbps) with the current Speedtest readings of 18 to 20+Mbps represents a very healthy increase in speed. It certainly feels faster - web pages just snap open and browsing is more responsive.

Another oddity is that upload speeds remain the same. Anyway, enough with all this testing, let's just say that I'm even more pleased than originally.

It reminds me of my first decent Hi-Fi outfit (Linn Sondek, Nakamichi ZX1000, Nakamichi 730 receiver) when I was listening for sibilance in the vocals, are the cymbals a bit splashy, the strings harsh? Then I thought, to hell with this, let's just enjoy the music.

The same applies here - less testing, more browsing. And I'm rambling again, sorry... 'bye.

Re: Happy update - ecstatic!

sorry to say, but maybe its my pc but the skyuser test is not accurate at all for me, it wass telling me i was conected at 2mb, on a wired connection livong 250m from an exchange, and router syncing at 16380kbps, i dont think so! speedtest.net says ~14mb and the xpsp2 download i was getting 1700kB/s or 1.7megaBYTES/second
