Alternative e-mails

As I wait for activation I'm ponderingwhat to do about e-mail as this is going to be the biggest outward change for me. What alternatives to Skys generic mail are people using and what are the advantages?

@Somebody

Well good luck for Thursday for both of us as for the router yep it should just be a case of plug it and and go, I have also set mine up with all the other PC on my network I went into the saved config file and edited it with all there Mac address etc and reinstalled it in the router and it all looks as it should.

@Sennockian

I have my own domain name so I use that along with a take anywhere Bigfoot email address that I have had for many many years, though I don't have a website setup for it

I also use gmail and yahoo as they both have pop/smtp access from my eamil client.

Hi,
Please bear with me - I'm new to all this!!
I got activated yesterday (as promised!!!) and I've followed your excellent instructions to set up email, but I can't seem to receive email I get the message:

Unable to logon to the server using Secure Password Authentication. Account: 'Maxine pop.sky.com', Server: 'pop.sky.com', Protocol: POP3, Server Response: '-ERR Invalid command.', Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC18

When I tried to change the adavanced settings to secure connection I then get:

The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'Maxine pop.sky.com', Server: 'pop.sky.com', Protocol: POP3, Port: 995, Secure(SSL): Yes, Socket Error: 10061, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

Please could you offer any help to explain where i am going wrong.

Many thanks.

PS.
Also, I can't see any pictures or buttons just boxes with red crosses in them. Any ideas?

Maxine,

I cant confirm this, but maybe there are problems with Sky's mail servers. I haven't been able to get onto the Sky broadband portal this morning - it's actually reporting an error rather than just sitting there doing nothing. The 2 may be connected?

As far as not seeing the pictures/buttons, chances are this is due to settings in your firewall on your PC. I had exactly the same when I was running ZoneAlarm, have disabled ZA altogether and now I see everything.

According to several of the people on here, you should be ok if you disable ZA. They say that the Sky (Netgear) router's hardware firewall is very good and should be sufficient protection.

Personally I would like to continue running ZA, but at the moment I am having so many problems with SkyBB that I am disabling anything that can possibly interfere with my connection.

One of the options/settings in ZA should allow you to see the pictures/buttons. I had a quick look whilst I was still running ZA, but did not figure out which setting needed changing.

Your router has a firewall so you're still protected

Unfortunately this only true for attacks coming from the outside. If you get something nasty on your pc it won't stop stuff being sent out. You should ensure you have an up to date virus checker and microsofts free windows defender is also a good addition to support it. You can still use XP firewall on your pc, but once agian this only really blocks incoming stuff and is a bit redundant if you use your router.

Problem is with products like zonealram and others is that they are too strick, complicated to use, and if you don't know what you are doing, can easily mess things up with your network and software
