SMTP Timeout

Bit of a strange one this folks. I have a sky account, and my wife has an account running off it which she accesses from a laptop configured in Outlook 2007.

Everything was working fine until a couple of days ago and now, mail can no longer be sent (receiving fine) and we receive the old smtp timeout error. Nothing was installed at this time, nothing has changed on the laptop or my PC, I have uninstalled and re-installed Office, re-created the profile and account on the laptop yet the problem remains.

If I reconfigure outlook to use my account, the problem remains which rules out the account so I'm a bit stuck.

I'm tending towards a windows problem with a file which may have got corrupted but wonder if anyone has any ideas on what may be causing it, or aware of the specific files the process uses which I could possibly change on the laptop.

Thanks for looking.

Re: SMTP Timeout

Can you post the full error message please and are you running any firewall on the PC?

General error: 'The operation timed out waiting for a response from
the SMTP Server. If you continue to recieve this message, contact your
server administarator or ISP'

I only have windows firewall running and tried sending with it disabled, made no difference. Doesn't the fact it is 'waiting for a response from the server' suggest that the mail is getting there ?

As I say, everything HAS worked up until last weekend so unless any changes / updates have occurred without my knowledge, no changes have been made to software / settings.

Thanks.

Re: SMTP Timeout

Microsoft have a decent help page on this topic Troubleshooting error messages that you receive when you try to send and receive e-mail in Outlook and Outlook Express and it might be a good idea to check the points they raise.

In adddition:
Delete and recreate the <Profile> in <Control Panel> / <Mail>

Join the Sky User SMTP Server and see if that works any better.

Re: SMTP Timeout

Thanks dms05, I've been through those checks and also re-created the profile.

I could understand the problem if it had never worked but the fact it has suddenly stopped working is the puzzling bit which suggests something has got corrupted rather than it being a settings issue.

Re: SMTP Timeout

Well, re-built the laptop today and still the same problem so I guess we're back to a setting that may need changing. Just need to find out what changed last Sunday !

Stumped !!
