@SUE_COTTON - Sky use Google for their mail platform, and the settings for Googlemail are quite precise, and can be easy to get a bit wrong.
Please excuse if you have already been through this - it is where I'd normally start debugging
My initial thoughts, given the error message you are getting, is that you have not got the network ports correctly configured, hence the "POP server not working" message.
The following would be true for OS X Tiger or Leopard
Start up
mail.app
On the Accounts panel for mail.app go to the
Advanced tab and at the bottom half of the screen ensure that the following is set correctly:-
Port
995
Use SSL is
ticked
Authentication is set to
Password
Then on the
Account Information tab
Click Server Settings
Check that the Incoming Mail Server is correctly specified
Server port =
465 (this conflicts with Skyuser's script)
Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) is
ticked
Authentication is
Password
Username and Password are correct
The full config details from Sky are pasted below:-

Configure your email program:
1. Open Apple Mail.
2. Click Mail and select Preferences...
3. Open the Accounts tab and click the plus sign (+) along the bottom to add a new account.
4. Select the server type in the Account Type drop-down menu.
5. Enter your name and Sky Email address in the appropriate fields, then click Continue.
6. Enter either pop.tools.sky.com or imap.tools.sky.com in the Incoming mail server field.
7. Enter your full Sky Email address next to Username:.
8. Enter your Sky Email password then click Continue.
9. For Outgoing Mail Server, enter smtp.tools.sky.com and select Use Authentication.
10.Enter your full Sky Email address next to Username and enter your password.
11. Click Continue followed by Done.
12. Click the Server Settings button.
13. Verify that Outgoing Mail Server is smtp.tools.sky.com.
14. Verify that Server port is 465.
15. Verify that Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) is ticked.
16. Enter your full Sky Email address next to Username, enter your password and click OK.
17. Click Advanced and tick the box next to Use SSL.
18. This port should change to either 995 for POP3 or 993 for IMAP.
19. Close the Accounts window.

And for OS X Leopard (not a lot different)

4. Fill out the following details on the Add Account screen:
– Full Name
– Your Sky Email address
– Password
Click Continue then follow this process:
1. Select the correct Account type, either POP or IMAP.
2. Add the description for this server if requested.
3. For Incoming Mail Server, put pop.tools.sky.com for POP3 or imap.tools.sky.com for IMAP.
4. Enter your User Name (your full email address).
5. Enter your Password.
6. Click Continue and your details will be checked.
Enter the details for the Outgoing Mail Server settings:
1. Enter a description for this server if requested.
2. For Outgoing mail server put smtp.tools.sky.com.
3. Click on Use Authentication.
4. The User name and password fields should be automatically filled in for you.
5. Click Continue and your details will be checked.
6. Click on Create within the Account Summary screen.
Your new account has been created. You may need to alter the ports:
1. Open Mail, select Mail and then Preferences.
2. Select the correct Account.
3. Click on Advanced.
4. Ensure the Port settings are 995 for IMAP or 993 for POP and that Use SSL is ticked.
5. Save your changes.
