it could well be.. but its only happened when no MAC is spoofed, I would need more testing to say its absolutely for sure MAC vs NO MAC..

if I get kicked off again with this HG612 I will stick my DG834N on for it bit with no MAC spoof...see if it gets kicked off, allow it too happen a few times THEN spoof the MAC in that and seee if it stops (as I cant spoof MAC in this HG612)

that way it will paint a better picture of whats happening

      Good idea

I've not needed to spoof the mac thus far, then again I'm on FTTC these days so it could be different to the ADSL platform, although saying that I never previously had to bother on ADSL either.

It's not impossible that either the config is slightly different in different areas/generations of equipment or maybe Sky are about to start clamping down on 3rd party Router use.

I hope they aren't as their router is plop in comparison with quite a few of the 3rd party options available, providing we're not doing any damage to their network or bothering their support with problems when using 3rd party routers I can't really see why it should cause them any issues.

That said it wouldn't surprise me if people run into an issue and forget to plug the sky supplied router in before calling up support.

I mean I was still connected @ 16Mb but no IP address assigned,
This will happen with any modem/router, whether it is set up for Sky or not. All it indicates is that ADSL is enabled on your line. Back in the very early days of Sky BB, '06-'07, it was thought that the MAC had to be spoofed, this was later found to be incorrect. I have had about a dozen routers connected to my line, none of which required MAC spoofing.

true. but the point being was that I was connected one minute, then wasnt (without rebooting or anything)

link time = 1 day 18 hours... still not been kicked off yet - just for reference... it was Oct 7th, Sunday Morning (or around then) when it was kicked off

Re: Kicked off Network with HG612 in less than 24 hours (no MAC spoof)

...well.... I still havent been kicked off the network yet, i HAVE had many re-syncs since due to work ive been doing with scripts and ive also fixed my HG612 to the wall just above the NTE-5 so its hidden out of the way and now only the sky-hub is on show, so I dont know if that has an effect, I wouldnt have thought so, if they were gunna kick me off with random or timed checks it would happen regardless of 'uptime'

Iam pleased, because I cant spoof MAC in this HG612 lol

Re: Kicked off Network with HG612 in less than 24 hours (no MAC spoof)

You don't need to spoof the mac on Sky ADSL products, all you need is the username and the password and the following settings.

      Encapsulation: PPPoA
      VPI/VCI: 0/38
      Multiplexing: VC

That has been like that since the day people first sussed out how to get their username and password from the Sky routers.

Re: Kicked off Network with HG612 in less than 24 hours (no MAC spoof)

I have been kicked off twice before , before I signed up with sky I was told on another forum that I would need a router that could spoof MAC address because sky can use it too detect your not using their router and kick you off the network, I heard of a few people have it happen to them, what exactly is happening I dont know...

How to get round Sky MER and use your own router.

Re: Kicked off Network with HG612 in less than 24 hours (no MAC spoof)

The other forum is quite simply wrong.

Sky have millions of customers, and hundreds if not thousands of customers are using their own routers.

If Sky really wanted to block those people that use their own routers, they would have done so 6 years ago to set a precedent. Quite obvious to me that Sky cannot be bothered, and for those that use their own router, more than likely have or will ever have a reason to pester Sky support. All Sky would need to do is identify the Vendor ID of the router and block it.

If you have been kicked off twice, then the reason will not be because you are using a non Sky router, and I suggest you look elsewhere as to what the reason was. Suggesting in anyway that the MAC is needed to be spoofed imo is complete misinformation, and therefore could lead people into spending money on a more expensive router, of which they do not actually need to do so.

Re: Kicked off Network with HG612 in less than 24 hours (no MAC spoof)

The link you give concerns Sky Fibre which uses a different protocol, ie., it uses the WAN MAC address as part of the process to authenticate. If you are on ADSL with PPPoA there is no need to spoof anything, as it uses the username and password to authenticate. ADSL on MER requires a different approach, which is well documented in this forum. If this is your problem you will find more information here -

Sky's MER and why it does not work with other routers

Sky's fibre does NOT check the wan mac it just needs you to send the username and password in dhcp option. 61
