Question After DLM - which mode?

After being left alone and reasonably content for 2 years Sky decided to once again inflict DLM, this resulted in a much reduced download from the nominal 3000 kbps which was on GDMT. After some exchanges and much irrelevant information have now got the following stats:

      System Up Time: 70:08:40 - 26/12/11 @ 19:25

Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
      WAN PPPoA 774178 1151854 0 239 6155 70:07:31
      LAN 100M/Full 88479 67546 0 306 70 70:08:35
      WLAN 11M/54M 1091092 719714 0 5938 179 70:08:22

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 2592 kbps 608 kbps
Line Attenuation 59 db 31 db
Noise Margin 9 db 7 db

Can anyone tell whether this is ADSL2? Also have never had Upstream above 416 before, is there any compromise on downstream with the higher value?

Its G.DMT. The 9db noise margin shows you can get a bit more. If it stays like this or the speed does not go up with a reboot, try one, you could call Sky and ask them to raise it a bit. The higher upload is perfectly OK.

Many thanks, would be obliged to know how the stats indicate the mode? Yes intended rebooting pre lunch tomorrow if the noise is still holding up, did reboot to get it where it is now and it increased speed with the noise at 4 rising to 7 at the time.

On G.DMT the sync speeds are always dividable by 32. With ADSL2+ although the speed is set is dividable by 32, it always syncs a few kilobits lower.

Smile Re: After DLM - which mode?

      Update and departure:

Plodded along on 2592/606 until 22nd Jan and then found I had 2045/510 which thanks to Isitme info confirmed that the incompetents had reintroduced ADSL+ yet again - polite request for G.DMT with reasons ignored., asked again with same result.

Mysky had confirmed DLM again in operation and pronounced on 26th connection set to 2.0 Mbps (still on the same 2045).

Asked for a third time for G.DTM but also a MAC expecting some reaction - well yes it produced one, the code in under 4 hours so better to go!

Now with o2 on 2900/859 but on ADSL2+ which surely indicates something about the quality of Sky systems?

Past Thinkbroadband Speed logs for Sky and current o2 are :

Down 2.22 Mbps (1.67 Mbps to 2.48 Mbps) Sky (78 Tests)
Up 0.39 Mbps (0.33 Mbps to 0.5 Mbps) Sky
      Down 2.61 Mbps (2.59 Mbps to 2.62 Mbps) o2 ( 5 Tests)
      Up 0.73 Mbps (0.72 Mbps to 0.73 Mbps) o2

So far looking much better, as the line is on the long side when inclined might give plain ADSL a go as I think I can change it over in th router.

You do know DLM is an automatic thing and can just come on with no agent intervention at all don't you? Chances are no one at Sky deliberately put you on ADSL2+

Yes thank you, I did know but to make it clear DLM has been reintroduce every year or so and served no purpose on my longish line which has always been reverted to G.DMT after a load of hassle with you ex colleagues. Given some adequate systems and procedures the Dim Line Management would not be reapplied time after time by the "Real Enemy" i.e. Sky Management.

Anyway o2 ASDL+2 is working better than Sky has ever done in 4 years on either mode, perhaps you can offer a technical explanation, that could be a useful contribution?

Re: After DLM - which mode?

No one at Sky, management or otherwise, can stop DLM kicking in if it sees something it thinks is causing an issue

o2 use different exchange gear, have a different default SNR and probably match router chipset to DSLAM chipset to aid stability so no wonder it runs differently. I'm on o2 as well and have had no issues in the 2 years I've been a customer.

I was just pointing out that your accusation of a Sky agent turning DLM back on was wrong

Sorry was not intending to direct any related criticism at individual Agents for applying DLM (only inability to respond to requests) but having repeated line testing over 4 years is a nonsense when proven as inappropriate. The lack of technical systems is a Management responsibility, too bad they do not understand the application of QC.
