15 days since upgrade and slower speed

      Hey hey

I wonder if you wonderful people can give me an idea as to what is going on.

I jumped from Broadband Base to Unlimited on the 15th January. They informed me, via a letter that it would take ten days to retest the line. Fine, no problem there.

The issue is that 15 days later, my 2 meg connection has halved and my upload has doubled.

      These are my router stats:

Connection Speed 1020 kbps 604 kbps
Line Attenuation 28 db 15 db
Noise Margin 21 db 16 db

Impressive, I'm sure you'll agree. Am I still being DLM'd? I spoke to the technical support people who were, as predicted by myself before calling, utterly unhelpful.

I do have a short extension cable (perhaps 5'?) but it's the master socket it's connected to and I've tried all manner of different wired configurations to see if it will sync at the exchange faster.

      I was getting a solid 2mg before, so I'm a little confused.

      Any help appreciated.

It looks like DLM has found fault with your extension and capped you. Phone Sky and tell them DLM has left your line crippled and you would like it manually configured.

Before you do, plug the router straight into the Master socket using only the supplied cables and take your stats, then remove the faceplate and plug into the Test socket and again try your stats. If there is a large rise in the noise margin your internal wiring is causing problems.

Re: 15 days since upgrade and slower speed

      Hey dude

      Thanks for your reply.

My stats are - using the cables supplied by Sky and with nothing else attached (i.e. the phone line is not connected to the microfilter):

      Master Socket

      Line att: 31/15
      Noise: 31/15

      Test Socket

      Line att: 29/14
      Noise: 31/16

Do I still need to ask them to configure it manually? Looking at those stats - and with my, limited in comparison to your collective, knowledge, I don't think it would be the extension cable causing the issue?

Call them up and tell them you are not getting your full speed, leave it in the test socket during the call to cut down what they can ask you to do and you should get it dealt with straight away.

I am afraid it is. Your noise margin has increased by 10 dbs, which is equivalent to 3-4Mbs of Sync. Your noise margin of 31 dbs, means you should get a speed of around 13-15Mbs.

Re: 15 days since upgrade and slower speed

Okie doke, thank you for your assistance. I assumed because the difference - because it went from 31/15 to 31/16 wasn't that big a jump and made little or no difference. 13 - 15 Mb sounds about right given the distance from the exchange (about 1km)

I shall get onto sky next week and get that sorted. I'm assuming I should just ask them to DLM my line again, once I've re-wired my house to move my router closer to the socket (i.e. buy longer ethernet cables!)

Thank you once again. You're a gent and a scholar!

Re: 15 days since upgrade and slower speed

There was not much difference between your master and test, but there was a big difference between using the extension and not using it.

On the topic of whether they will re-run dlm or not, I suppose that is down to the agent you get. However, if I were yourself, and most agents will do this anyway, just ask them to manually set your line and you'll be done in a couple of minutes.
