Speed & Disconnects - Been ok for 13 months!

    Hi

I've been happily using sky mid broadband for the past 13 months with out any issues. I had a quite respectible 5mbps connection but over the past few days I've had lots of random disconnects and seen the speed drop down to just over 3mbps.

I've been using a Draytek Vigor 2600G for these 13 months with out any problems. Also got an filter plate on the socket to split off the ADSL.

I've reconnecting the old Sky Router to see if this helps solve any issues but doesnt seem to be the case

    ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 3093 kbps 606 kbps
Line Attenuation 48 db 28 db
Noise Margin 1 db 20 db

Got a call logged with Sky so got to jump through their hoops.

Has anyone else noticed this or is it just me?

Noise margin would idicate a problem on the line, i would try taking the socket off (your face plate) and test using the "test" socket behind

I'll get the screw driver out now and give it a try.

Ok I've taken off the ADSL nation face plate and the sky router now says the following

    ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 5019 kbps 606 kbps
Line Attenuation 49 db 28 db
Noise Margin 9 db 20 db

Thats pretty close to what I normally get, although I've found if I have it disconnected for a while it connects at 5mbps then DC's and RC's at 3mbps, very odd.

Time for more testing, i say that because previously i've been advised the ADSL faceplates harrdly ever "break", but looking at the result without it on, would point to being the problem.

I guess it could be the face plate or the cable I use to go from the device to the socket

Thanks for the pointers I'll try swapping them out and see if it improves stability.

Hmm still randomly disconnecting even when connected to the test socket very odd. Still waiting on Sky Support to reply.

Well sky insisted on sending me new equipment before they would log a fault with an engineer

Not always the faceplate at fault - sometimes the "test" socket can get a little corrosion, which the unplugging and plugging in of cables cleans off. Take a look at the test socket - the pins should be gold, not green.
