Re: Sky to perform a spot of ADSL line management on some 300,000 lines

Forgot to mention in my last post that when I enquired if my DLM had finished, she mentioned that a total of 2000 lines only were done this month, with a further 2000 to be done in aug/sep time. Can someone from SKY confirm this, as I thought that up to 300,000 were being done, which I did actually think was rather a high figure to be done at once.

it is that much...the majority of lines are fine after DLM...some, though, go a bit mental

Re: Sky to perform a spot of ADSL line management on some 300,000 lines

I found out that I was chosen from SKY on this website to help me reverse that DLM.

Why even bother doing DLM on a line that never even had a problem before.
What I find absolutely offending is that they never even let anybody especially me know that DLM was going on.

Its like I am getting my house burgled @ night and I don't even know about it.

likening it to being burgled is a bit far, its not like it's the be all and end all of your life, but totally agree that people should've been told...can't think for the life of me why they didn't think to say anything...nor can i work out what the criteria is for the DLM...

Re: Sky to perform a spot of ADSL line management on some 300,000 lines

my speed is down to
ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 10238 kbps 796 kbps
Line Attenuation 31.5 db 18.1 db
Noise Margin 8.1 db 16.0 db
from syncing at 16382

Hey NewsReader - can we sticky this next bit on every single page please, 'cos its been said so many times and people on this thread ask the same question over and over again....

Quote:
Any ISP performing DLM is doing so to stabilise the customer's line. That you, the customer, do not percieve the line as being unstable is irrelevant. You will not be able to see what the ISP does. The discrete error protection techniques inherent in TCP/IP protocols and the lower level transmission protocols of ADSL will correct any errors that occur across an unstable line. These corrections will manifest themselves as pauses in data transmission. That is not a problem for browsing or file transer. But such error corrections when they occur play havoc with streaming video and IP voice. So much so that these technologies will be unusable.
So why have Sky decided to do DLM at this time? We can only speculate - but given the apparent drive to improve the quality of the connection it is reasonable to assume that they have streaming video and/or voice in the pipeline.

It is clear that the process has not been faultless. But one has to wonder how these reported failures stack up against the successes?

Yes, in theory it could, and it has reportedly done so if you look back on this and the sister threads to DLM on this forum. But generally DLM could mean a lower speed to improve the stability and (importantly) the quality. The intention is to achieve a balance of speed with stability and quality. How much lower is anyone's guess. It all depends on how misconfigured your line was at the outset.

Re: Sky to perform a spot of ADSL line management on some 300,000 lines

Hi. I reported yesteday that my line was restored to around just under 8megs yesterday...

Well, the technician tried to contact me again tonight but unfortunately I was busy at my work and missed the call - he left a message to say would call tomorrow..

Anyway, have just got in and checked my connection..

Pleased to see it has now changed over to my old ADSL2+ mode and speeds have increased again..

I wasn't very impressed before with the DLM process and lack of information from Sky about it (mainly).. but in my opinion its obvious to me Sky do in fact value their customers and do want to provide them with a great service....Sometimes things do go wrong of course as this forum shows..

If you are having problems with DLM - hang in there.. keep calm and call them up once the process is over if your line is shot...

Not trying to come across all smug or anything here... just my opinion having gone through this DLM thing... there is hope... ;-)

Over two weeks on 384kbps down, 420kbps up... now:

Upstream rate = 764 Kbps, Downstream rate = 11263 Kbps
Mode: ADSL2+
Trellis: U:ON /D:ON
Line Status: No Defect
Training Status: Showtime
Down Up
SNR (dB): 7.1 13.5
Attn(dB): 38.0 18.6
Pwr(dBm): 1.3 12.8
Max(Kbps): 13444 864
Rate (Kbps): 11263 764
