Or perhaps most of us are fairly experienced with Sky customer service and prefer to try to get our information elsewhere (for example, this forum) prior to the last resort of ringing Sky...

the vast majority though won't notice any difference as they don't constantly have scripts running to check connection speed/SNR/CRCs etc as they use it as exactly what it is - a different way of doing things...not the ONLY way of doing things..
|
I don't have constant scripts or check my connection speed all the time either - I have to say it was fairly obvious something had gone pear-shaped when I suddenly started getting weird disconnections and web pages and online games starting running slowly and sporadically ...
Perhaps I, and the others posting on these forums, are not the "vast majority", but you can't do something as major as this to customers lines and just hope no-one notices or cares. That is just wrong.

SO many have benefitted from the DLM so far I can't see it being stopped - although the criteria by which it picks the DLM should be looked at...

It should be short lines only not long lines only, long lines are the ones that need manual configuring as they can upset a dlm easier. The even better option is have a more conservative default for new customers eg. 10db snr margin which will likely reduce drop of synch problems and then the power users who want performance can ring up and get a lower snr margin.

It's the opposite. Its long lines that have the most to gain from DLM in terms of stability. Got to be careful here not to throw the baby out with the bath water, just because Sky have not informed, and therefore caused distress to some (it does not matter how few/many there is no excuse) of their customers, DLM is a very good thing from which we will all gain in the end.

Even all the Mr & Mrs X's who live 500m from their exchange and enjoy a stable 16meg connection now ? The only way they will benefit is if sky lift the 16meg cap.

No not them, but they are only a handful of any ISP's customers and they already have a good connection, its unlikely DLM would offer them any benefit.

Yeah, I know mate, that was said a bit tongue in cheek as sky at the moment seem to be applying it to the "few" as well.

Re: Sky to perform a spot of ADSL line management on some 300,000 lines
I know what you are saying. In any automated process there are going to be winners and losers, and this is where Sky come in. Once this is all up and running they must be willing to adjust lines manualy and if necessary overide DLM. But there are going to be lines which run better overall with DLM despite a speed reduction.
I am sure that mine is one of them, it supports 16meg, but looking at the errors last weekend with a Speedtouch and DMT tool it is not too healthy

I know, mine has not dropped for ages, but this is more a sign of a good router as anything else, it dose not mean your line is perfect.
