Sky On Demand not allowing play while downloading

This is a discussion on Sky On Demand not allowing play while downloading within the Sky Catch Up TV forums, part of the Sky On Demand category; Sky's "immediate" on Demand advert is misleading to say the least. I have tried to download and watch Eddie Stobart ...

Sky On Demand not allowing play while downloading

Sky's "immediate" on Demand advert is misleading to say the least.

I have tried to download and watch Eddie Stobart from 5 on Demand on two HD + boxes. I used to be able to watch when the download was at about 2% but I am unable to watch it until it is fully downloaded.

      Anyone else having this problem?

Re: Sky On Demand not allowing play while downloading

Sky was recently taken to task over their promise of it being "instantly" available since in some cases it can take longer.

In practise the majority of the content is available to watch within a minute, provided that you have a reasonably fast connection. HD content may take a little longer.

You need to download so much so that there is a small buffer sufficient to allow you watch the programme or film without catching up to a part which hasn't downloaded.

Sky has reduced the required buffer size and this is one reason why much of the content is available much sooner.

Their advertising also states that the minimum connection speed is 2mb now.

I do not think that the content from each of the other providers is held on Sky's servers. I may be wrong. In any case, if a particular server is very busy it may take a little longer to download a specific item.

Were you downloading the SD or HD version? I have just started the same program in SD and it was available to view in less than 30 seconds. Download speed about 9Mb, what's yours?

There's your problem, your connection speed is nowhere near fast enough to actually stream HD. It probably takes around 2 hours to download, which far exceeds the running time of the program. I think until you get a faster connection, you will either have to wait until the download completes or be satisfied with SD.

Re: Sky On Demand not allowing play while downloading

Sadly I think that I have to agree with Tom here.

I have found that I need around 8mb to stream HD content through my HT or TV.

On the plus side of things though, because Sky downloads the content first, rather than streaming it live, you are able to view it without the inevitable 'buffering' which Virgin was so keen to show wasn't present anymore (opps! they do still have it at times).
