      ex pat subscription cancellation

Hello, I do hope you can help us with our problem.

We moved out of the uk 8 years ago and took our digi box with us. Found an Irish company online that supplied us with the means to get sky which was set up to be paid by monthly direct debit from our barclaycard. Now we want to cancel the subscription and just cannot do it. We have no longer got the details of the irish people and in fact know none of the details of the address they attached the account to so sky will not or cannot do anything. 'Lost' the credit card but the direct debit just automatically went onto the new card.

      What can we do?

Cancel the direct debit surely would be easiest and then they would get in touch pretty quick

Ring the credit card company and stop the monthly payments, if anymore do then come out you can claw them back (upto 6 months).

That will soon stop it, also a quick call to Sky advising them you are using their service abroard will also cure it

      Re: ex pat subscription cancellation

We have done both of those things.

Barclaycard cannot cancel the payments. They say it's with sky.

Sky need to know the name and address of the account holder. We do not know these.

We have been paying, i think 26 pounds for this a month for almost a year with no card in the digi box.

Are we the only people to have this problem?

That is total rubbish, ring them again, how can someone take money from your account without authorisation.

Sky can get the details from the viewing card number, just tell them that a third party company supplied the card for use abroad, they will soon sort it out.

That's the problem with credit card monthly payments, they are not direct debits and they have little or no protection for you.

Does the credit card statement actually say "Sky" on the credit card or is it the name of the handling company?

As said above Sky and or Barclaycard should be able to sort you out, although I would phone Barclaycard fraud department up and see if you can get any help from them as they are more on the ball than the regular account managers.

      Re: ex pat subscription cancellation

It's a tricky one and I've seen postings elsewhere with people having similar problems.

Unlike paying by Direct Debit, where you can cancel the payment yourself, if you make continuing payments by Credit Card then the only way to stop the payments is for the recipient of the money to cancel the agreement.

In this case you are paying a 3rd party who in turn pay Sky so Sky aren't involved in your transaction and indeed you aren't even a direct customer of Sky as the 3rd party holds the registration.

Even cancelling the Credit Card doesn't help as your agreement with the 3rd party was well before the card will be cancelled and the Credit card company will continue to ask you for the money.

Telling Sky you are abroad won't help as they will cancel the card but the 3rd party can (and indeed will) continue to debit your account.

I've not seen anyone find a solution to the problem however if it was my Credit Card I'd contact the Credit Cards Fraud Protection Dept and get them involved, after all you are paying for a service but not receiving the promised benefit from the payment.

There is always the ultimate sanction, withdraw all your money and cancel your account with Barclays. They can't keep taking money from you when you don't have an account with them. Even a threat to do this may get you some action
