      Cool Outlook Newsgroups

Apologies if this is in the wrong forum or has been asked before, but this is my first post with the group.

I have just switched from NTL BB to Sky BB.

Whilst I was with NTL, I kept my Virgin Dialup account active. This allowed me to use the newsgroup reader within Outlook Express (news.virgin.net) via my NTL BB acount if I wished to.

The problem is I now get a 502 error as detailed below:

502 Permission Denied - Permission Denied -- Highwinds Software > Home - Usenet, NNTP Server Software (Tornado v1.0.6.380)

      Configuration:
      Account: news.virgin.net
      Server: news.virgin.net
      User name: admin
      Protocol: NNTP
      Port: 119
      Secure(SSL): 0
      Error Number: 502
      Code: 800ccca0

This also happens if I try to log into any of the other free usenet newsgroup servers available.

I have also tried using Forte Agent and Xana to no avail.

All of the newsgroups work if I pay through the nose on dialup.

Is this a problem with Sky or am I just missing something (like a brain??)

      Thanks in adavance

      Re: Outlook Newsgroups

Virgin's news server is for Virgin customers. Now you're no longer a customer they're not letting you access them (at least not when you're trying from a Sky Broadband account).

You should be able to access the free servers from any account, provided they are actually "free". From past experience, unless you're only reading text newsgroups, free servers are a waste of time.

Make full use of Sky Broadband and have a look at subscribing to a premier news server.

Core News will let you download a gig of data a day for about 3 a month, Newshosting will allow you unlimited downloads for around 7.50 a month.

Oh, and get rid of Outlook Express and get a decent newsreader that assembles all the parts for you.

I use Xnews (it's free) for music and Newsbin (not free) for anything larger.

      Re: Outlook Newsgroups

I used to use Newshosting but I found their speed could be a bit variable. Now I use Giganews which has a European server. I use Newsbin Pro as a newsreader which has up to 10 connections that increases download speeds.

      Re: Outlook Newsgroups

Thank you to you both for a prompt reply to my question.

It is quite feasible that Virgin/NTL have blocked my access to them.

However, I have been a dial up customer of Virgin since its inception 199? and became a NTL BB customer at around about late 2001 or early 2002, long before the merger of Virgin and NTL, and always had the ability to access any newsgroup, Virgin, NTL, Tiscalli, free or otherwise by using the LAN connection facility on OE.

Hence my confusion at not being able to do the same using the Sky BB account. Especially, as I can still access my Virgin E-Mail account via the Sky BB connection.

Being a bit of a Scrooge, I didn't really want to start paying for the access to newsgroups, however, with the money I am saving from NTL maybe I should pay towards access.

Re your comments about OE, I have been trialing Forte Agent in conjuction recently to see what benefits it has to offer.

      Re: Outlook Newsgroups

My limited experience of Forte is that it's horrible. It also doesn't seem to get a mention these days when people talk about their preferred news client (usually Newsbin, Grabit or Xnews).

What do you download on usenet? Do you use it for text in discussion groups or for downloading binaries?

Stick to Newsbin, Xnews (free). Haven't used grabit. By all means go for a free newserver for discussion groups, but for binaries pay for a subscription.

Sounds like Virgin are just blocking Sky IP's. I wonder why they'd do that?

      Re: Outlook Newsgroups

I have just switched from NTL to Sky. I can connect to the internet via a router connected to the NTL set top box or the Sky Connect router until the end of this month. What I notice is that I can't access the NTL newsgroups if connected to the Sky Connect router. I have yet to find out if Sky even provide a news service. I am struggling to setup my broadband but that is another story.

      Re: Outlook Newsgroups

Sky does not provide a news server.
