Newsgroup Downloads - 5 Minute Wonder!

I've just migrated to Sky from Pipex because of Pipex's ridiculous throttling of my download speed when using newsgroups.

I was connected to Sky today and the first thing I did was try the newsfeed out.

I was originally on a 1 meg service with Pipex and have gone over to Sky Max so the first thing I noticed was that, disappointingly, my DL speeds were not much quicker than before. I can live with this though as Sky is less than half the price of Pipex and Pipex throttled my speeds to sub 56K dial-up levels for most of the day.

However, the main problem I'm having now is that my newsfeed keeps cutting out after only a few minutes and I have to close down my newsreader and reopen it to get going again (clicking "retry download" has no effect).

I use Newshosting as my news provider and Newsbin as my client.

Any suggestions as to what the problem is??

Try the usual tip on the forum turn off UPnP on the router, log into 192.168.0.1 sky and admin and UPnP is on the right last on the list I think and make sure it is turned off as this can cause regular drops and cut offs in connection.

Thanks, will try that as soon as I get back from the football match I'm just about to go to.

Weirdly, this porblem only affects Newsbin, I've tried Xnews and it doesn't cut out.

I'll let you know how I get on.

I use eu.usenet-news.net and don't have any speed problems. This costs a minimal amount as you buy Gbs which don't expire on a time basis.

I also use news.datemas.de a free service with no binaries. No speed problems with that either. HTH.

Re: Newsgroup Downloads - 5 Minute Wonder!

The problem isn't with my news provider. I have used Newshosting without problems until Pipex throttled my line so much I chose to migrate to Sky.

If I download from Newshosting using Xnews it doesn't stop every few minutes either.

I've turned UPnP off, but it has made no difference.

My next guess is to try downloading a newer version of Newsbin and installing that instead of my current version (unless anyone has a better suggestion?!)

Re: Newsgroup Downloads - 5 Minute Wonder!

newshosting seems to be throttled by sky from time to time no matter if you use port 7000,8000,9000,3128,80 or 119. You can push it up to 12 connections without getting warned at the moment but it still doesn't cut through the throttling. Switching ports sometimes helps for a short while. Apparently they're going to allow use of the highwinds Amsterdam server farm soon though which might help.

I've also got eu.usenet-news.net (who've already got the highwinds Amsterdam server) and speeds are good using the SSL option which is great. The only problem is that they're a bit more expensive (10/month unlimited).

I flashed my sky router with the latest netgear firmware and dont get any of the lockups you mention. Of course you should also check out your NIC manufacturer's site for latest drivers as well.

Re: Newsgroup Downloads - 5 Minute Wonder!

      Thanks for the reply.

The firmware version on my router appears to be newer than any listed on Netgear's site for the same router.

Again, I don't think the cutoffs are anything to do with Sky actively throttling as I can download using a different news client without problems.

If they are throttling the speed to around 1 meg DL, then so be it, that's still as quick as my Pipex connection could go but at less than half the price. Considering Pipex throttled back as far as 3 kbps, then being throttled to 115 kbps (if I am being throttled) is rather more acceptable.

Re: Newsgroup Downloads - 5 Minute Wonder!

Sky don't Traffic Shape/Throttle on Base, Mid, & Max (the LLU services).

The only shaping is on Connect - the re-sold ADSL Max service (& it'd prob. be BT doing the shaping).

The firmware version will appear different to that on the Netgear site as it's a Sky-specific version.

Some people find that using the normal Netgear firmware can help, others find it makes no difference.

Re: Newsgroup Downloads - 5 Minute Wonder!

I've just uninstalled Newsbin v 5.1 and installed v 5.3 and the problem has gone (and I'm getting faster download speeds).

Just "one of those things" I guess?!

Thanks for the help, seems a good forum so I reckon I'll stick around!

Ah ok Matt :waves:. I'm on Connect. Still, it's good to know that SSL can beat the system.

      goalscrounger, I'm running 5.34b6 fwiw.
