Upload speed dropped & Router stats

      Hi

I been on the Sky Max since 26/01/07 my down/up speed has dropped from 12.5mb down 764kb up to as low as 8mb down 606kb up phoned Sky tech support (muppets) tier one said she could'nt see any problems but would pass it on to tier 3 (yeah right) still waiting for tier 3 to call I should point out I live less than 100yards from my exchange

These are the stats from the router

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 9884 kbps 606 kbps
Line Attenuation 11.5 db 6.6 db
Noise Margin 6.8 db 17.5 db

Anybody got any ideas why my up spread has dropped and won't come up

      Yes and no.

A noise margin of 6.8db isn't low per se (the router defaults to a minimum of 6.9db when it syncs and normal fluctuations can tajke it below this), but you're right in that with an attenuation of only 11.5db, connecting at 9884kbps, the noise margin should be much higher. See the first sticky in my signature at the bottom of this post for background.

      @chewyleopard

      Welcome to the forum

There is clearly something wrong with your line - almost certainly noise related. You have an extremely low attenuation line (you are very close to the exchange) and with a relatively noise free line could expect to easily connect at ~16000kbps.

That you only ever connected at 12500kbps at best means that you have always had a noise problem. Recently it has got worse hence the drop to 9884kbps.

To determine whether the noise is local to you (house wiring) or on the line to the exchange you need to try a connection by plugging the router directly into the test socket which you will find behind the faceplate of your master socket (assuming you have an NTE5).

Please post your stats with this connection together with details of how you normally connect your router and I'll be able to offer further advice.

Yes I agree. Being so close to the exchange I would have thought you would have a better noise margin than that. Is your router on any extensions wires/leads? Can you connect it directly to the Test socket to see what results you get there.

Try 'Test your master socket' link on the right-hand side of this page.

Have a look at the Cabling and faceplate forum. It is likely that your household wiring is adversely affecting your noise margin.

You may also like to take a look at the TCP Optimizer here:

      Optimising your Broadband Connection

Being that close to the exchange I would have thought you should be getting close to the maximum speed. This tool may help you do that.

*Edit*: Beaten to it by a quicker hand.

Always a good idea but just in case of confusion, this tool can only impact the download speed not the router connection speed. Again, stating the obvious, you can't boost your download speed to a higher figure than your connection speed.

No - not the master socket. Test socket. As I said before, the master socket won't avoid your internal wiring.

Re: Upload speed dropped & Router stats

When you take the faceplate off you will see a socket on right hand side, this is the engineers socket and is isolated from your internal wiring. Plug into this and test speeds before and after.
