Angry So Angry! - Windows Millennium

      Hi

I visited my mother over Christmas. She has the full Sky package, so I asked her if she wanted to have free broadband as well. She agreed, so whilst at her house I contacted Sky and paid 40 over the telephone.

The man I spoke to said broadband should world with my mother's computer after asking when she bought the computer. He said it would be easy to install and there would be a DVD which would show her how to set up.

Well, I came home. My mother told me the modem arrived. The next time I visited there was no socket to plug the modem in. I then realised that my mother probably hasn't got an ethenet card installed. Anyway, my cousin popped around last night and installed one in her computer, but she still isn't online.

She telephoned me today to say she had spoken to Sky and they said it doesn't work with Millenium. Is this correct? I feel really angry that the person on the telephone was not clearer about what we needed.

I'm not much use really as I run Linux and use a different ISP. With Linux you don't use the setup CD as it doesn't work. Just a matter of setting up the modem router and off you go.

So should I give up on it as a lost cause? Or is it possible to get the modem online? As my mother is not very computer savy, she is happy to be hard wired. We will make sure the right ports are closed and she is running Thunderbird and Firefox.

I'm really hoping someone can help as I don't really want to spend anymore money. Is it possible that I can get my 40 back as they missold?

      Regards

      Nappy

Sky BB like any other BB service will work on almost any OS (Win98, ME, XP, Vista, OSX, Linux) , so long as you have a working network card.
It's the router that connects to the net, and you connect the PC to the router.
So long as you set up the LAN configuration you should be fine, you might have to goto to the network neighbourhood right click and goto properties then add TCP/IP.

So long since I've looked at 98/ME I can't remember the settings.

I can't think of any reasons why it will not work with Millenium. Why can't your Mum get it to work. What problems is she having exately ?

      Can you access the router?
Type 192.168.0.1 into an IE address bar & see if you can.
If so then it's not ME, it's something else.

Thumbs up Re: So Angry! - Windows Millennium

      Hi Everyone,

      Thank you for your replies.

My problem is, is that I am about 150 miles away from my mother. I've been told the disk doesn't work and she is not online.

I feel a lot more positive knowing that ME will work with it. I can't understand why they told her it wouldn't work?

When I last visited her modem looks very much like mine. I have a Netgear dg834 v2. Her's had an arieal coming out of it.

I know how to access the router/modem as you have described the same method I use with my own.

The next time I go to visit her is on the 19th March. So I shall know more then.

Thank you so much for your prompt replies.

      Regards

You don't need to use the CD disk that came with the set up, just plug the router in and it should work. Try accessing 192.168.0.1 via the browser if it doesn't.

It's more likely that they simply don't support it. For one, Windows Me is complete tosh, for two, Windows Me is complete tosh, for three, even Microsoft have moved it to "unsupported" status.

Do your mum a favour and buy her a copy of XP home

What you need is a friendly PC person that does live near to her to go round & help. if your cousin can fit network cards can he pop round again?

Yes, well, I'm not even running windows. This is working out to be very expensive
Off to find out prices for XP home.
