The computer was purchased from Tiny with Windows ME on it.

Yes, he could, but he is a very busy man. I felt really guilty, because my mum said he came after work on Tuesday and didn't leave until 1am trying to sort it out.

Anyhow, how is she going to learn if someone does it all for her? Although it does appear a lot easier sometimes.

Right, I have just come off the telephone with her and my head hurts.
She has 3 green lights on her router.
She went into the modem via 192.168.0.1. I used the very helpful 'sky router' sticky to find out the admin and password.

Under modem status it said 'connecting', rather than connected. Not sure what to do now

I was just going to get her to change the password when the machine froze. So we had to reset it. She told me that has been happening a lot and it seems to be going slower. (sounds ominous to me) I said I would come back to her.

Thanks for your help in advance.

Unless wireless has been disabled, there should be four lights lit on the modem (router). If the 'i' light is off, it will not work.

      mmm!
I have a netgear dg834 v2. So I only have 3 green lights. So I thought 3 was good. However, her modem is plugged into the back of the computer, so she is not using the wireless bit, via a yellow cable if I remember correctly. Does this make a difference to the number of lights?

Unless you have disabled wireless in the router setup page the wireless light should be on, along with the power, i and 1 leds making a total of 4.

No, we didn't disable anything. Does she need to ring Sky then, or are they going to say they can't help, because she has Windows ME?

They will probably use that excuse, but as I said in an earlier post me should work fine. I think the problem could be local to your mums pc. Sorry if thats a bit vague but without being able to look at the pc its hard to help. Trying ringing sky and avoiding telling them that you are using me if poss ?

They will often say they can't help with things they don't support such as equipment they haven't provided and problems which may be to do with certain operating systems and browsers and so on.

Unless I'm mistaken, ME came out just after Windows 2000 and on Sky's website when checking if your PC could go on their broadband, they say: "To get Sky Broadband, you'll need to make sure your computer meets the minimum specification and that you have a BT Line:

      PC minimum specification:

      Windows 2000 or higher
      133 MHz or higher
      Spare Ethernet port
      100 MB hard drive space
RAM - 64 MB or higher"

Working on that basis if I'm correct, I would say that they might try to help - but then again, I think Windows 2000 was a higher "quality" than ME so maybe it's technically a lower spec even if it was later - not used either so can't say for sure. If your Mum had no access to the net, she was reliant on the operative making sure she had a compatible PC so I feel a bit sorry if it turns out they won't help. I know when I ordered they asked how new my PC was but a new PC doesn't equal a compatible spec, especially if it's new but is running an older operating system (even if this is relatively unlikely). If it can't be gotten to work, there's always the cooling off period where it could be cancelled if it's not already gone.

Anyway, if she does call, make sure she's not ringing on the 0870 numbers - just use the freephone 0800 051 2595 number and follow the prompts to get through to the broadband people.

Re: So Angry! - Windows Millennium

      Hi Everyone,

Finally sorted. I am visiting my mum again. This time when I went through the trouble shooting with the technical department, he asked me to unplug everything in the house not just plug the modem into the main socket.

So that meant the telephone upstairs with the sky eye thingy and the sky downstairs. Guess what we have broadband. So there is one filter after the extension to the computer, one in the skybox and one upstairs.

The computer is in the dining room and uses the telephone socket in the kitchen. So it is shared with the kitchen phone. I have plugged in the extension which is about 5 metres long and then put the microfilter in after that, but when I plug the kitchen phone in I lose the broadband connection, the extension doesn't go into the microfilter as it is the wrong connection. However, I am quite sure I can sort this one out.

The freephone number worked twice and then stopped. I am also not able to log into the sky site to get use the email.

I am grateful for all your help, really pleased it is sorted now.

      Regards

Its not that it wont work, its just that the tech support wont support it.
