Moved to Sky and gone from 5.5Mb to less than 1MB

Okay, not sure whats going on but my sister has just got Sky and is getting just under 1MB, where as she was getting as high as 5.5MB with Plus.net. She was with Plus.net for about 18 months and switched to Sky this week. I believe she was originally on a 2MB package on Plus.net, but then around Nov/Dec last year, we got them to upgrade her to 'Up to 8MB' and once it went through she was getting an average of about 5.5 MB, unfortunately on the package she was on she had a 5GB download limit in peak time and was often getting throttled down to below 1MB cause she exceeded it, so she switched to Sky (on my advice).
The the big question is, how come she is suddenly only getting less than 1MB?

Sorry, I should add that she was activated about a week ago, but only connected about 2 nights ago because Sky hadn't sent out the router!

If you could post her router stats I'm sure someone will tell you what speeds she should be capable of and possible fixes to some of the more common problems experienced by new users.

Also, don't forget there is a 10 day training period on connect when the router speed may fluctuate while finding a stable connection.

      Stats are :-

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 2496 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 56.0 db 31.5 db
Noise Margin 3.6 db 8.0 db

Now I was told else that max based on these should be about 3.5 MB, but she definately had 5.5MB with Plus.net.

BTW, incase it makes a difference, she is on CONNECT package.

Ouch, those stats are awful, there would be no way to get 5.5 meg with 56db attenuation.
The biggest issue seems to be the noise margin of only 3.6db, any faster than a couple of meg and you would get continual disconection.

Re: Moved to Sky and gone from 5.5Mb to less than 1MB

Connect the router directly to the test socket behind the faceplate of her phone socket and see what speed you get there.

If it improves, which it should, then you'll knoiw the problem is with the internal house wiring. According to 'Saturdays' attenuation/connection-speed table she be able to get around 5MB

The stats Saturday quotes are for ADSL2, not MaxADSL

Apologies. I didn't realise it made so much diference at lower speeds.

True at lower speeds the differences are minimal, but to get 5.5meg you are really looking at sub 40db.

Hopefully as you suggest the issue lies with internal wiring, which can usually be fixed easily.
