Thanks Lazerus, some interesting comments. It would seem that only about 70% of users are happy with the router, some after a bit of tweaking, which is not really a very good recommendation. If this poll is representative, it looks like it is a matter of luck whether you get a good 'un or a lemon.

Maybe some advice to the OP's sister on how to tweak her router would be of more value than advising her to do line checks

That's why I suggested posting the advanced router stats in the appropriate forum once wiring problems had been ruled out. Most problems reported on here seem to be due to noise and attenuation rather than the actual router. Sky routers seem to be notorious bad when adversely affected by internal wiring.

The extended stats may go some way to showing the appropriate 'techies' whether this is the case or not.

Okay, I'm mightly *****ed, just did a huge post and I lost it.

So hear is the short version.

Tested at the engineers socket, speed the same, but stats difference since those I posted on Friday, but they nay have changed before, as reconnecting it all upstairs and the stats are almost identical to those I had from the master socket.

      New stats are

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 7616 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 18.0 db 13.0 db
Noise Margin 18.9 db 21.0 db

      stats last week were :-

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 2496 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 56.0 db 31.5 db
Noise Margin 3.6 db 8.0 db

Well I'm not quite sure why your noise margin and attenuation have changed so much from before but now it seems as though you are connecting at 7616kbps, close to the maximum speed for the connect package. How far are you from the exchange?

Well according to Samknows.com we are approximately 635 metres from the exchange (straight line distance). I spoke to Sky this evening, they got me to run a couple of things (most of which I had already done), then they raised a ticket to Tier 2 and have asked that we connect the router to the main socket for the next 48 hrs while they get BT to check it and then they would could back to us. Are we likely to hear back in 48hrs? Its not ideal having the router downstairs as the PC is upstairs, but we can suffer 48 hrs if its likely to help.

Was trying to make sense of your stats but I'm afraid I'm not savvy enough to tell what you could expect from sky. Your attenuation and noise margin seem good enough just to go for the 8MB package and get similar to what you have now, but I don't know how that translates to the sky packages.

Hoping someone else can add to this?
Thanks for the reply -I know the information is diffrent than expected and am thankfull for the input.
