2 phone lines in the house, 2 different broadband speeds. why??

      hey people,
i have 2 seperate phone lines in my house with different phone numbers, i recently cancelled my newer line to move the broadband onto the original line in the house so that the sky TV and sky broadband was registered with the same number.
on the newer line (the one i just cancelled) the line could take 7MB and i was getting a stable 5MB as i am only 1.77KM from my exchange. on my original line i signed up for the 16MB max service but i was told that my line could only take 2.5MB. both these lines are in the same house, on the same exchange and the same distance from the exchange. the only thing different is the original line was installed in 1981 and the newer line was activated about 1999. could the age of the line really affect the speeds of my broadband?

any help would be much appreciated

      Thanks

Two things to consider -- the age of the cabling and sockets (corrosion on the pins) and what's connected.

Try removing all extensions (especially cordless phones).

Some people have tried metal polish on contacts, but after all these years the whole system must be suspect.

ok thanks. because of the age of the phone line, would sky upgrade the socket, wiring so that it will be able to support faster speeds?
