      Recommended Reading (Common Problems Explained)

      Hi, all,

For those interested in how ADSL/ADSL2/ADSL2+ Broadband actually works, I've found some great reading at the Wikipedia website:-

      Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL)
Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
      > Basic description of ADSL and how it uses frequencies above Voice.

Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer (DSLAM)

      > Explains what the DSLAM unit at your BT Exchange actually does.

      ITU G.992.1 Standard (ADSL)
ITU G.992.1 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
      > Explains HOW data is actually transmitted over your phone line.
      > Answer to problem: Why slow-down occurs (bit swapping, minimum 2 bits per bin)
      > Answer to problem: Why disconnection occurs at Noise Margin < 6dB.
      > Graph 1: Downstream Line Rate (Kbps) vs. Line Reach/Length (Km).
      > Graph 2: Downstream Line Rate (Kbps) vs. Line Attenuation (dB).

      ITU G.992.3/4 Standard (ADSL2)
ITU G.992.3/4 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
      > Briefly explains the difference between ADSL and ADSL2.

      ITU G.992.5 Standard (ADSL2+)
ITU G.992.5 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
      > Briefly explains the difference between ADSL and ADSL2+.
      > Note: Sky Broadband employs ADSL2+

Hopefully, these links will help you to better understand why common problems occur, e.g. low sync speeds, low Noise Margin, slow-downs and disconnections.

      Cheers!
