I am now at log heads with them cos they reckon there systems say I have been recieving broadband even though they disconnected it in Nov! Why is everything we do these days such a nightmare! I cant tell them to stick there phone line cos I need it for Sky.
Nah NTL should have closed account in Sept for broadband,Phone went when they introduced<0845 number for customer services>, If i get a bill from em i just phone "free phone number" i kept safe & shout "Supervisor on this line NOW" & tell em i aint paying-they had enough 30 day written notices aug,sept,oct,nov-so supervisor just credits it back.
I'm surprised broadband is still working<it was just a idea this morning try it>
but maybe it not easy to switch it off if our in a ntl cabled ariel street<council house's>
But BT no probs at all happy with them so far 0800 customer service number, line rental seems cheaper than ntl & thanks to sky i've not payed a penny for any calls this month-only use phone after 6pm
Nothing is ever simple these days M8

just set page to auto-refresh every 2 mins & waited for google to show up-its nothing i did, this is first problem i've had with connection i dont loose it at all-but just got round to trying the TCPOptimizer.exe that some one posted<thank you>-didn't expect much,so a bit shocked i got another 1.5MB-so wapped it back to original settings & lost it-so reset it again & its back to 1.5MB more than i was getting-so its deff working for me.
doubt your prob is BT wires-cos these are real old ones here i didnt expect em to work,i expected to have to pay for a new line in-so i guess i was lucky there,
But as you say you've had probs for years,i would check wires to master socket & make sure they are in tight
