Seemingly excellent stats, but slow connection?

      Hey folks,

I'm on the Leicester exchange, on the Max 16mb service.

      My stats tonight are:

Connection Speed 15323 kbps 764 kbps
Line Attenuation 21.5 db 12.8 db
Noise Margin 10.3 db 12.5 db

As far as i understand, these are excellent stats right?

Except, my connection has been, for the last few months, fairly sluggish, and i'm getting tired of it. I understand that speeds on websites will vary, they have differing numbers of users, all pulling down different speeds.

However, after the first couple of weeks, i seemed to notice a decrease in the responsiveness on the connection. This is most noticeably on a private server i use. It's a 100mbit server with very few users. I should be maxing out the connection on it, and in the first couple of weeks, i managed to get 1.5mb/s, i even got 1.6kb/s once.

BUT... now i only get 600kb/s at the maximum, very often nowhere near that.

      My questions are:

Do Sky shape certain ports? This server is on port 4848.

Does anybody have any other ideas? As i said, it's not just this server, but that's where it's most noticable.

Edit: I've just realised i accidentally (duh) posted this in the wrong forum, can a mod move it to the right one please?

Not that anyone has reported but I suspect they probably do.

Could be errors on your line? What do your extended stats look like?

What about your connection? Have you made any changes e.g. new PC/laptop, moved to wireless, plugged in an extension etc?

Yes I'm sure you're right. I was thinking of traffic shaping.

Whilst this clearly isn't overt on Max I'd be really surprised if there wasn't some form of shaping to load balance the network.

Re: Seemingly excellent stats, but slow connection?

I think what we have to remember money is no object to Sky, their aim / goal is to have the best ISP network in Europe and have an unlimited budget.

As long as they reinvest (evidence shows they are) I don't think we need to worry. The only problem will be when the "I want to downlaod the internet brigade" find Sky BB. But then if you think about it Sky can give their TV away free, they have that many subscribers now, and so the minimum income per heavy downlaoder will be 25.00 per mth per person (on MAX).

I have downloaded less than about 3gb since I have been on, so I suppose I am subsidising those who download an awful lot more.

Re: Seemingly excellent stats, but slow connection?

I've not moved the router, the pc or anything. I have a brand new laptop, but it's connected at 54g with a good connection i'm confident it's not bottlenecking (mainly because it's the same on my iMac, which is wired).

I've done the extended stats using the utility and I can't see anything wrong with them, but i'm not exactly an expert on reading them. I'll post them below, providing it's not super long.
