      Speed: Up 15323kbps, down 764kbps

Line attenuation: Up 12.0db, down 6.7db

Noise margin: Up 14.4db, down 13.5db

Looks like a bit of a differential in upload and download speed from where I'm sitting, whatever that means!
Oops - correction guys. I got my downs and my ups the wrong way round - i.e. speed should have read 'Downstream 15323, upstream 764'. Does that change anything in terms of the advice you are giving me? Does it mean that the exchange is not in my cellar but in fact on Mars?

It is Zone Alarm Pro, but with some extras they offered at renewal time in October (for an additional fee naturellement). I did have Ad-Aware and AVG on my last system but haven't reloaded them since I upgraded (and given my download speed it will probably take me a week and half to install them).

I *may* be able to purloin a wireless laptop from work - but only if I bribe someone in IT. Maybe I can offer them the shoes.

LOL. Yup, the shoes would do it.

"These shoes were featured in a Broadband Poster" - that'll get the IT lads excited (Just don't tell them which Broadband...)

Right, so I put my machine through the TCP Optimiser. My signal strength has now gone from 'very good' to 'excellent'. But my up/down speeds are exactly as they were. I will now investigate whether or not I have bought a house that was formerly a high security bunker and I am trying to operate my wireless broadband from a lead lined room.

Have you tried a different channel for the wireless at all?

Glad you have the resolve to get to the bottom of it

By the way I think you should have an avatar of Dorothie's shoes (from the Wizard of Oz)

Not sure what you mean by different channel. When I ran the TCP thing I did the lazy version and asked it to modify all networks. When it rebooted I saw that I had defaulted to a network called Belkin something or other, and this was unsecure so I freaked out and instantly reset it to Sky (which is showing a full five bar signal strength).

      Consider it done

PS: Latest speed check on Dan Ellwood comes up 343kb/s - sad or what? Think I'll go to bed now and dream sweet dreams of high speed broadband.....

      Great avatar

      http://www.skyuser.co.uk/forum/view-wireless.html

In the wireless settings you will see the channel setting, default is 6, change the auto108 to g&b and try a different channel number (all done by drop down boxes)

Try each channel for the best result. ie 1 to 13

      Re: Dismally Poor Speed

Looks fiendishly complicated! Think I'll give that one an overnight rest and perhaps tackle it when my brain has refreshed (and diffused the effects of the cabernet sauvignon). But thanks to everyone for the advice so far - thank goodness places like this exist and that there are kind hearted souls willing to give of their experience and expertise. Night night.
