      Low download speeds?

I've had all the usual problems with the router dropping every 20 mins, and managed to fix that thanks to the advice given on here - so many thanks!

However, I am finding that when trying to download files my download speeds are often below 100kbps - This seems to be very slow to me but i am not hugely technical so have no real idea. I'm currently on the 8mb package after being downgraded by sky tech support at their suggestion as to the reason for the router dropping every 20mins.

I'm on wireless with a netgear pci card.

My download speeds on Namesco BroadbandMax ADSL Broadband Bandwidth speedtest | Test your ADSL Broadband connection speed are around 1000 kbps and uploads are around 350 kbps

I have already run the TCP Optimizer and this has made no difference

The stats shown by my router when plugged into the master socket are as follows:

Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
      WAN PPPoA 55533 93373 0 585 12770 02:36:24
      LAN 10M/100M 199 0 0 3 0 02:37:10
      WLAN 11M/54M/108M 94696 56735 0 12907 681 02:37:00

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 7296 kbps 416 kbps
Line Attenuation 41.0 db 27.0 db
Noise Margin 7.9 db 14.0 db

Any advice as to a) what sort of download speeds i should be getting
and b) how i would improve them from the 80-100kbp i am currently getting

      Thanks

      Re: Low download speeds?

Your connection speed is a little low due to you being capped.

Your wired download speed should be ~85% of your connection speed i.e. ~6200kbps.

Assuming that the shortfall isn't because you are measuring the speed wirelessly then I can only guess that this is due to gross errors on your line.

      Re: Low download speeds?

Line errors are generally caused by noise on the line. Noise on the line often originates from internal household phone wiring.

A good test to see whether this is your problem would be to connect the router directly to the test socket which you will find behind the faceplate of your master socket (assuming you have an NTE5).

If your download speed improves then this shows that your wiring is causing at least some of the problem (I'd be surprised if this is the complete answer).

      Re: Low download speeds?

I am already plugged into that - i have the face plate off of the only connection in the house and am plugged directly into the line- so i guess it's not to do with the wiring.

      Re: Low download speeds?

Depending on what programme your using for downloads, try altering the port in the server options as it worked for me. I was on port 80 i changed it to 25 and now get 450kbps instead of 110kbps

      Re: Low download speeds?

forgive me i am a technophobe! - how do i alter the port for downloads - I tend to be using rapidshare for the downloads and when i first sorted the original problem with the router droping off was getting downloads on that of up to 800kbp - but now much much lower

      Re: Low download speeds?

Hi Again, When i changed to sky only been with them since 28th January 2007 i use newsgroups like newzbin and usenet which are great but you need to know how to use them. In rapidshare in the set up somewhere there you should be able to alter the ports you are on. I would google "rapidshare ports" and see what comes back try there forums for answers. Good luck.
