      Question Router Stats

Been activated nearly two weeks and finally managed to get a stable connection. Thank You people of SkyUser.

Here are my stats, i am 3.3km as the crow flies from the exchange.

      System Up Time 22:53:23
Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
      WAN PPPoA 61291 79780 0 165 1036 22:51:37
      LAN 10M/100M 264 0 0 0 0 22:53:21
      WLAN 11M/54M 95564 73623 0 1158 191 22:53:11

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 1280 kbps 416 kbps
Line Attenuation 61.0 db 31.5 db
Noise Margin 11.3 db 13.0 db

The noise margin has gone as low as 7.3db.

Speed test returns 1103kbps down and 354kbps up.

Are these OK or is there anything i can do to improve them.

      Re: Router Stats

      Welcome to the forum

To be honest your connection speed is a little low even though your attenuation is on the high side. It may be possible to improve this. You haven't however said what your router is plugged into. This can/will make a big difference.

To see what can be done please post your stats when connected to the test socket which you will find behind the faceplate of your master socket (assuming you have an NTE5).

One odd thing about your connection is that your noise margin is much higher than normal. Whilst high is good, it does mean your connection is a bit slower than it possibly needs to be. If you're interested in this sort of stuff then see the first sticky referred to at the bottom of this post.

      Thanks.

The router is plugged into the master socket.

      Just rebooted and got these,

The master socket connection can easily be adversely affected by any other phone wiring in the house. The test socket can't.

      Re: Router Stats

There you go. You're now connecting at the maximum for your attenuation which is more than twice your speed to start and nearly twice the master socket.

Fit a filtered faceplate to your master socket and plug your router directly to it and that's pretty much what your connection speed will then be.

      Re: Router Stats

Filtered faceplate, any recommendations? I have one extension hard wired into the back of the original one if this makes a difference.

Will the noise margin stay stable or will i have to reboot if it drops into the low 6's.

      Cheers.

      Re: Router Stats

ADSLnation seem to be the favoured suppliers and have a good reputation. Their faceplate allows filtered or unfiltered connections for hardwired extensions I believe. However, avoid using any extension to connect your router if at all possible.

A quality filtered faceplate will probably reduce any noise margin fluctuations to a relatively low level - they will still be there though. If this becomes an issue it is easily solved.

My stats are very much like above:

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 2880 kbps 768 kbps
Line Attenuation 61.0 db 31.5 db
Noise Margin 8.1 db 11.0 db

however my Noise Margin can run around the low 6s, sometimes dropping into the 5s, then I may need a reboot.

      How is it easily solved?
