Why the difference in speed between WiFi and ethernet

Can anyone explain the speed difference I get between wireless and ethernet connections to my sky router, please. See the following taken 1 minute apart:

      Wireless

      Cable

I'm using a Linksys 2.4Ghz pci 802.11g wifi card. My router is in the same room as my computer and the signal is excellent.

BTW this is not a one off speed test. All others mirror these figures.

I would prefer to use wireless as I don't want a cable running from one side of the room to the other. But with these speed figures, using cable is a no brainer.

      Any ideas. Thanks in advance.

I used the optimiser mentioned on this page:

      http://www.skyuser.co.uk/forum/netwo...eeds-read.html

and got an extra 1-2MB download speed.

WOW. What an amazing proggie. It begs the question of course, just why is it needed?

Above figures after using the optimiser. Still slower than the ethernet cable tho.

      Thanks for your help.
