      Does this sound right?

      Hi,
I'm on Max, and am a long way from the exchange (around 7km). I've just had an engineer connect me a new master socket direct to the cable from the pole (i.e. no extensions) due to slow speeds/bad syncs I was getting.

Now my stats are as follows:

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 1984 kbps 736 kbps
Line Attenuation 15.5 db 31.5 db
Noise Margin 7.3 db 7.0 db

      A speed-test on BBmax gives 1560 down/511 up.

I realise I'm not going to get anything like 16MBPS, but should I be happy with what I'm getting? It's still 3 times what I was on before (512k Plusnet)...

Anything else I can do? I've read elsewhere that Sky "cap" the speed - I called them a couple of times about frequent sync-drops before I had this new master socket fitted. Could this be the case here?

      TIA

nothing really u can do due to ur distance from ur exchange. it also goes off how much noise is on ur line. The 15 ur router is reporting is a bug in the router. reboot ur router and find out ur true noise. If its about 55 then thats about the best u can hope for. Look at this link for more info.

DSL ZoneUK - How fast can I get on ADSL2+?
that will give u ur max speeds if u put in ur noise.

@nhalliday - welcome to the forum

If doubt you really are 7km from the exchange as this is really at or beyond the limits for ADSL. Unfortunately it looks like your router is playing up as it is reporting the well known 15.5db figure which is a bug (if 15.5db were true then you would have a line length of ~1.1km). You should be able to get your router to report the right figures by rebooting though sometimes it takes a reset (pinhole on back).

Until you know your true attenuation figure it's impossible to say whether you are connecting at the right speed.

In terms of your download speed, 1560 on a 1984 connection is fine.

      Re: Does this sound right?

      Thanks for the replies.

According to BT, I'm around 7km from the exchange. I only got ADSL after a long wait once they rolled out the extended reach trial a couple of years ago. that's why I'm not too upset about "only" getting 1.5MB!

I rebooted the router a couple of times, and sure enough, it now says 63.5dB. Presumably then, I'm not capped, and it's the best I can hope for?

      Re: Does this sound right?

63.5db makes you ~4.6km line length (as I suggested before, I'm not at all sure you'd get any connection at 7km).

As it is your maximum potential speed is a shade over 2200kbps. With current technology that's it I'm afraid.

Do you need the "unlimited" Max? If 40gb and a lower upload speed is enough then I'd suggest you'd be better off on Mid and save 5/month (or even Base and get it free).

      Re: Does this sound right?

Thanks, just reporting what BT told me a couple of years ago (as to why I couldn't have ADSL at all!).

I don't think the 40GB limit would be a problem, but will I get the same speed on the free option, or does it use different technology?

The most I ever got on my Plusnet "up to 8MB" connection was 0.5MB, and I don't want to go back to that!

      Re: Does this sound right?

At your attenuation you should get the same downstream connection speed on Base, Mid or Max (and irrespective of whether you get put on (Sky) G.DMT or ADSL2+).

Try it. Switch on the proviso your (downlstream) speed is the same. If it's not (and it should be) then switch back.
