Smile Noise Margin - OK at Test Socket - 0db at Extension.

      Hiya,

      I keep getting droupouts:
I think it is to do with my Noise Margin...
At the phone extension in upstairs bedroom it normally reads below 5db or gives a stupidly high figure as below (router bug??).

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 3584 kbps 736 kbps
Line Attenuation 53 db 15.5 db
Noise Margin 2147483646 db 9 db

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 3584 kbps 736 kbps
Line Attenuation 53 db 15.5 db
Noise Margin 0 db 9 db

HOWEVER when connected to Master Socket it rises to 10db and then when I connect to the TEST socket in the Master Socket it rises to 15db, is this a good figure?

What can I do? Have I got crap wiring?

Having a modified NTE5 that splits the signal in hallway is not really an option as I have only three wireless dvices and three wired devices upstairs near router.

Hope someone can help, I've cleaned the Master socket contacts and redone the wiring at Master skt but made no difference...

      Hi Mate.

      Welcome to the board.

The problem is almost definitely bad internal wiring.

Check the connections at the upstairs extension to make sure they are sound & if in doubt re-terminate the cables using the correct tool (if possible)

Also when you say extension are you referring to a properly wired telephone extension as installed by BT or other telecoms contractor OR either a DIY extension or telephone extension cord.

Telephone extension cords & most diy kits use poor quality cable & as such cause exactly the problems you are seeing

Have a look here for loads more help & info Cabling & Faceplate Help

      Hope that helps

Cheers, I think you are right although there are the following two points.

      1. The really high noise margin of 2million whatever only occurs if I pick the phone up.

      2. Connecting any phone introduces "noise" on the line (you can hear it) even at master socket.

I've tried countless routers and the cabling is a properly wired extension and not an extension cable.

I can only ever have two phones, the third one knocks the line dead...

Do you have a micro filter on every phone, digibox etc?

If you don't then you need to.

If you do then probably one of them (or one of the devices) is faulty. To check this unplug every phone/digibox then plug them back in one at a time to see when you get a problem. You could also try just one phone plugged in and try each of the filters on it one by one.
