New User - great sync speed terrible speed tests

      Hi folks,

After having a fault at the exchange corrected, I Just got connected to Sky BB Max. My sync speeds seem very good and the margins and attenuation OK:

      ADSL Link-------------Downstream-----Upstream
Connection Speed 15323 kbps 764 kbps
Line Attenuation 19.5 db 11.6 db
Noise Margin 15.5 db 13.0 db

But realistically all the tests I do give very poor results. Apple trailers load very slowly, pages load very slowly and all the broadband speed tests give ballpark similar results.

      eg.

      http://www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk/

gives 280kpbs down and 615kbps up

The upload is clearly ok. But down is really poor. Time of day makes no difference.

No collisions or other stuff that would be a worry. Detailed stats at the end.

Phoned sky and they tell me that activation date isn't due yet (2 more days).

Is this likely to improve or will I have to phone again after the official activation date and hassle them?

      Cheers

      George

That's an understatement - your stats are fantastic

First thing to rule out: you are connecting via ethernet cable not wirelessly?

A higher upload speed than download (and both low) is often a symptom of incorrect TCP/IP settings for a high speed connection. Have you optimised these? If not then visit dslreports or use TCPoptimizer.

If neither of the above are relevant then it's a bit of a mystery and you'll need to look for obscure effects from things like firewalls, faulty ethernet cables etc. Do you have another PC/laptop you could try?

Lastly, a number of users have been told that their connection will improve within a day or two and in some cases this has proven to be the case. Whether this is just coincidental with other changes I'm not sure as I'm struggling to think of the mechanics involved that would suppress an ADSL connection without this being evident in the router stats other than through something like traffic shaping - and why would they do that?

EDIT: Doubt this is the problem but one other thing to check: can you look at your internet properties and ensure you're not going through a proxy (e.g. from a previous ISP)?

Re: New User - great sync speed terrible speed tests

Thanks for the feedback. Yeah, if they can be believed, the stats are really pretty cool.

I'm running OSX, I'll get broadbandoptimizer and take a look at tuning the mtu etc. Currently the mtu (as reported by ifconfig) is the default 1500. I can imagine this adding a bit to the speed, but OSX does auto mtu descovery and I'd expect it to have automatically lowered the mtu if there was a problem. I will investigate this though.

I'm connecting via ethernet. I'll try changing the cable, but it's one that always worked before. I'll check if it's been broken when I moved it. I get the same stats with wireless on my OSX laptop - I guess the speeds I'm getting are slow enough not to be limited by the wireless bandwidth.

Firewalls (on the router) is I believe the default. I did have a rule in there for a website, but removed it. So it's set as Block all in, allow all out.

I disabled OSX's firewall - but no difference. No virex / MacCafee.

I'm just hoping that when BT fixed the line fault, they did their part of the ADSL setup, but sky hasn't gotten round yet to setting up the bandwidth limits properly for my account. Perhaps they don't bother shaping upload traffic as mostly it'll be low or limited by the broadband upload speeds. But for download, perhaps they default you to 512kbs until someone at sky sets up the traffic shaping right. I really hope I'm not being too optimistic...

It would be fantastic if I do achieve anywhere near the sync speeds.
