      Fast connection slow download

      Hi guys fantastic site.

I'm a newbie very limited in computer lingo. I have a problem with my 16Mb max broadband. I'm running it on a PC and laptop and I move the modem around the house to suit. The laptop is closer to main telephone connection and the PC is connected through internal extention cables. I do not use the wireless connection just the 2 ethernet cables.

According to the modem my laptop downstream connection speed is about 11,000 kbps and upstream is about 750 kbps.

According to the modem my PC downstream connection speed is about 4000kbps and up and upstream is about 750 kps.

Yet when I do various speed tests the results I get are disappointing.

On the laptop I get about 600 kps for download speed and 600 kps for the upload speed.

For the PC the download speed is about 300 kps and the upload speed is about 600 kbps.

I have tried the following but none of it helped.

Tried the optimizer and it didn't seem to change the speed.
I have also phoned sky and they say that the speed tests are not accurate and everything looks ok to them.
I tried removing the faceplate thing and it didn't help.
I have changed the MTU setting.
I have disabled the wireless connection
      I have disabled the UPnP.

Is it possible that the output of the modem is broken?

Sorry about this being long winded but if anyone has any suggestions I would be greatful.

      Cheers

      Re: Fast connection slow download

That's very odd - you've run TCPoptimizer and you're connected by cable and your download speeds are still terrible

It's extremely unlikely that your router is at fault but possible I suppose. However, my first guesses would be that:
      • you have something nasty on your system sucking up bandwidth
      • you have a firewall issue
      • you are using overloaded speedtest servers
      • your noise margin is very low

      Taking these in order:
      • close all browsers then type netstat at a command prompt and list the number of established connections
      • temporarily turn off any firewall (e.g. McAfee)
      • try this speedtest server
      • post your full stats including noise margin

      Welcome to the site spa816

Good advice from Saturday but you may want to get yourself couple of these Plug and Play Mains Network Kit and do away with and extensions far far better.

      Good luck.

      Re: Fast connection slow download

To be honest I've no idea what your problem is

The difference between your PC connected router stats (4000kbps) and your laptop connected router stats (11000kbps) is presumably down to the different phone points you use for these? As Wheelie has said, extensions are often a real barrier to good connections and you probably should sort this out by rewiring or using the technology he suggests.

However, I don't think poor wiring would account for the extremely low download speeds you are experiencing. If that were the case then I'd have thought this would be evident in your router stats (i.e. low noise margin and connection).

I know you said you've used TCPoptimizer but could you humour me by checking? Go to dslreports and try their tweaktest. Is that showing as OK?

Other than that, if you've temporarily disabled all internet blocking programs like McAfee, Norton, Windows defender etc. then I'm stuck.

Another Skyuser member is reporting similar problems. I wonder if this is a new fault which we don't know the reasons for yet?

      Re: Fast connection slow download

Doubt this is the problem but one other thing to check: can you look at your internet properties and ensure you're not going through a proxy (e.g. from a previous ISP)?

      Hi Saturaday

When i try to run the tweak program this is displayed

      * Downloading file of size 1024000: Failed to download: Read timed out

I have tried it about 5 times with the same message appearing.

      Re: Fast connection slow download

The only thing I can think of now is testing the router in the master socket and seeing if the laptop speed improve.

There is a link for this in the Member Centre bar down the left of the page.
