      Connection speed / reliabilty dropped out of nowhere

      Hi all,

      A few days ago my connection quality just dropped out of nowhere, youtube vids and other streaming media take an AGE to load and need constant bufferring, every so often it takes about 10 attempts to connect to a webpage (even sites like google and ign) and my newsgroup speeds have dropped from 6.29mb to 2.97mb. Its been like this for about four days now. Ive changed nothing and im getting quite frustrated with it now.

      Any ideas?

      Thanks!

      *Edit* oh im also on the max package

      Can you post your router connection stats please?

      Also, are these problems limited to particular times of day and/or have you put up Christmas lights around the time this first started?

      i have to switch my router on and off when the web gets buzy, it resets and then is fine, speed comes down though, the christmas tree lights knock out a tad of 'rf' so can effect any telephone/cat cables running along side them

      @dijital

      Your stats look good (I assume you're on Mid?) so with a connection of 7+ meg it difficult to know what would cause a sudden drop in download speed to less than half this

      Does it make any difference if you temporarily disconnect all phones/digiboxes etc?

      Can you detect any change to your voice line e.g. hissing or crackling?

      Do you have another RJ11 you could try?

      To be honest the above are really only stabs in the dark as if you had these sorts of problems then you would expect them to show as decreases to your connection speed not to your download speeds.

      What about your PC? Have you made any changes there e.g. new firewall/antivirus/download helper etc? Is there anything that may have made a change to your TCP/IP settings? It might be worth running something like TCPOptimizer to get them set up properly.

      Based on your stats, Hopefully after a little tweaking you should be able to get the speeds up!

      I went from;
      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
      Connection Speed 8672 kbps 768 kbps
      Line Attenuation 32.0 db 20.0 db
      Noise Margin 4.9 db 10.0 db

      to

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
      Connection Speed 11223 kbps 921 kbps
      Line Attenuation 35.0 db 19.1 db
      Noise Margin 11.2 db 18.0 db

      and that was just buy installing a new BT NTE5 socket!
