You can setup the DynDNS account in your router under "Dynamic DNS". This means you do not have to run any additional software on you PC / MAC.

I have been using it for about 6 years (When they first launched) and have only known the service to fail once due to server problems.

      Re: Static IP Address

I've just got myself a slingbox, and am having problems - ie. it'll work one day, but then not the next, and I've been unable to figure out why. After reading this forum, it would appear that I need a static IP address - which would explain things.

I've tried to follow the instructions in this thread about how to get a 'fake' static IP using DynDNS - but i'm completely in over my head and stuck!

I've opened a basic free account with DynDNS - but I haven't got a clue what needs to happen from here on in - can anyone help?

      TIA

      Tony

Can anyone confirm that this is correct?
Stop me where I go wrong, you want to network 2 macs I presume in your house hold, did you not know that the sky router runs on the DHCP principle, which means ip addresses are automatically assigned by the router ending up with each computer being 192.168.0.2,3,4 and so on, but if you want to network 2 computers that are at different postal locations I would suggest you use something like DYN DNS, don't mean to be cheeky about this but could you please specify where the two mac's are!

      Re: Static IP Address

      Tony5101,

Slingbox will work just fine with DHCP, it doesn't need a static address.
Also you don't need to worry about dynamic DNS for slingbox.

The Slingbox setup includes configuring 'Finder ID' which is I believe essentially its own version of DDNS. You need to make sure the specified port (default 5001) is open on your router.

It's a good idea to allocate a static IP (defalut 192.168.0.237) and your specific MAC address in the router setup, but I think it works OK without this.

I've found the slingbox Finder ID system to be very reliable, if you can connect sometimes and not others i'd look at more basic problems like is the slingbox or router turned off?

      K.

      Re: Static IP Address

      Thanks for this Keef.

I enlisted the online support of the SlingMedia tech. They re-allocated the default id (192.168.0.237) and made some adjustments to the firewall settings on the router.
All appears to be working fine now.

      Cheers,

      Tony
