      Rubbish Download Speeds

Downloading a Machinama movie file at the moment from Netwings.Org
and its dribbling out at 95 KB/S despite my router saying downloads of 11198KB/S. Surely that can't be right ?

Never been able to download anything at anything like the speeds my router says, Why?

I am on the Max package.

Depends on the speed of the connection at the other end too, in this case the netwings.org server.

Best way to test your 'real' download speed woule be to use one of the online speed testers such as the adslguide one.

      Actually, These speeds tests are hardly ever accurate, I suggest you try an FTP Test, Download a LARGE File, From The Universities Mirror Server;

      ftp://ftp.mirror.ac.uk/mirror/ftp.fr...4-bootonly.iso

just as a side note, I have always found that downloading the windows xp service pack 2 from here:

      http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

always maxes out a connection and is a pretty reliable test. I havent used it with a connection above 10mbit but im sure it will max out anything you throw at it!

That Microsoft Server is pretty decent, But remember whereas the ftp.mirror.ac.uk - has on average 10+ Users online!

The Microsoft Server Will have 100+ Users Online!

      Quick Comparison,

      Speedtest.bbmax.co.uk -
Download Speed: 5957 kbps (740.6 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 551 kbps (68.9 KB/sec transfer rate)

      Microsoft -

      ftp.mirror.ac.uk -

      No probs!

I'm surprised Easynet/Sky don't have a server on their network somewhere to perform speedtests from, it'd save a lot of finger pointing and confusion.
