advice with a D7000 (ADSL) modem
ive had a N300 ADSL modem and have been haply for years !
due to some issues with DOS attacks ive swapped to a D7000 Modem

it seems to drop its connection randomly any advice (yes i've done updates)
as second thing ive noticed

Denial of Service attacks against individuals are very unusual. The are usually associated with businesses. If you are seeing an unusual number of attempted connections then it is likely your IP address was previously 'owned' by a gamer. Normally changing your IP address will reduce the frequency, also turn off Respond to Ping on WAN, unless it is really needed.
I'm sorry I can't give you any advice on connection dropping.
