      Smile Latency improvement

My line resync'd at exactly 4am this morning & as a result i'm pinging all of my benchmark addresses at 2ms lower than usual:

      bbc.co.uk was 16ms
      PING 212.58.241.131 (212.58.241.131): 56 data bytes
      56 bytes from 212.58.241.131: icmp_seq=0 ttl=248 time=14.1 ms
      56 bytes from 212.58.241.131: icmp_seq=1 ttl=248 time=14.5 ms
      56 bytes from 212.58.241.131: icmp_seq=2 ttl=248 time=13.1 ms
      56 bytes from 212.58.241.131: icmp_seq=3 ttl=248 time=13.9 ms

      google.co.uk was 16ms
      PING 216.58.210.67 (216.58.210.67): 56 data bytes
      56 bytes from 216.58.210.67: icmp_seq=0 ttl=59 time=14.1 ms
      56 bytes from 216.58.210.67: icmp_seq=1 ttl=59 time=14.7 ms
      56 bytes from 216.58.210.67: icmp_seq=2 ttl=59 time=14.5 ms
      56 bytes from 216.58.210.67: icmp_seq=3 ttl=59 time=14.3 ms

      thinkbroadband bqm was 17ms
      PING 80.249.99.164 (80.249.99.164): 56 data bytes
      56 bytes from 80.249.99.164: icmp_seq=0 ttl=60 time=15.3 ms
      56 bytes from 80.249.99.164: icmp_seq=1 ttl=60 time=15.0 ms
      56 bytes from 80.249.99.164: icmp_seq=2 ttl=60 time=14.6 ms
      56 bytes from 80.249.99.164: icmp_seq=3 ttl=60 time=15.3 ms

Also, the weirdness i've experienced for a long time whereby each new ip address i'm allocated would result in different ping times to addresses appears to be over now too.

Is anybody aware of any network maintenance happening last night?
I'm certain that this won't have been down to DLM fiddling with the profile.

      Re: Latency improvement

So bbc.co.uk & google.co.uk are sharing the same address?

      methinks..

Pinging bbc.co.uk [212.58.244.20] with 32 bytes of data:
      Reply from 212.58.244.20: bytes=32 time=8ms TTL=56
      Reply from 212.58.244.20: bytes=32 time=8ms TTL=56
      Reply from 212.58.244.20: bytes=32 time=9ms TTL=56
      Reply from 212.58.244.20: bytes=32 time=8ms TTL=56

Pinging google.co.uk [90.222.188.237] with 32 bytes of data:
      Reply from 90.222.188.237: bytes=32 time=8ms TTL=61
      Reply from 90.222.188.237: bytes=32 time=8ms TTL=61

      Reply from 90.222.188.237: bytes=32 time=8ms TTL=61

      Edit..

I'm using googles DNS servers so that may account for the different addresses.

I did 3 to each address & intended to post the best of each.

      Too late

For the record MARJOHN56 IS NOT A DUFFO!

      I'm using sky's dns.
I used google's for years but switched to sky's about 2 months ago.

      edit
My routers dns lookup does give 212.58.246.103 & 212.58.244.20 for bbc.
The 212.58.241.131 address is one i just have copied from years ago.
They all have the same ping times.

      Re: Latency improvement

Try switching back to Google's see if there's any difference.

But dont forgot to flush the cache first!

I might try that later today.
At present though, each dns lookup for google.co.uk does result in a different address anyway.

      Re: Latency improvement

      Really?

Just completed that excercise, 3 ping runs flushdns after every 3 pings so 9 in total and got the same address every time.

      Re: Latency improvement

Yep, just done 3 using the dns lookup function on the diagnostics page of my sagem router:

      1) 216.58.209.227
      2) 2.127.252.237 & 2.127.252.221
      3) 216.58.210.35

That's how it's always been for as long as i can remember.

      edit
Hmm some are slightly better than others:

      PING 2.127.252.237 (2.127.252.237): 56 data bytes
      56 bytes from 2.127.252.237: icmp_seq=0 ttl=62 time=13.0 ms
      56 bytes from 2.127.252.237: icmp_seq=1 ttl=62 time=13.3 ms
      56 bytes from 2.127.252.237: icmp_seq=2 ttl=62 time=14.1 ms
      56 bytes from 2.127.252.237: icmp_seq=3 ttl=62 time=13.8 ms
