      Remote access of emails

I am one of those unfortunates who used to have a perfectly usable o2 email account - until o2 was bought out by Sky.

Now, I am unable to access the server and view my emails remotely via the web - an essential if i need to look at them while away from home. I have tried both the o2 and the Sky help-desks several times. Neither have been remotely helpful, usually claiming that it is nothing to do with them and the responsibility of the other company.

It can't be hard. Surely it is possible to access the server and view/download my emails without having to be at home and using my internet connection. It was always possible historically before Sky bought out o2. I'd expect it is no more difficult than knowing the appropriate URL and logging on, but neither of the help-desks seem to have a clue

      Can anyone out there assist??

Are you still able to access your emails via a client?
What happens if you try to login here:

      Re: Remote access of emails

If you can access your email via a client (Thunderbird etc.) then Email Hosting Services | Pick Up Your Email | mail2web.com should work. They do have a secure login so that other people cannot intercept your credentials but it does require you to trust their service.

      Re: Remote access of emails

I can access my emails at home via my Sky broadband (I can also access them via my phone - so it shouldn't be hard to get remote access via a URL). If I go to o2 Webmail I have an account but there are no messages in it. The webmail account is completely separate from the legacy o2 account that I still have and use.

      My current email account details are;
      incoming mail server is; pop/o2.co.uk
      outgoing mail server is; smtp@o2.co.uk
      my user name is; xxxx@o2.co.uk
the webmail account is a completely different address.

If I log on to my account on o2 the only email address i can see is the webmail one, and there doesn't appear to be an option to change it.

Try using mail2web with your user name and password.

      Re: Remote access of emails

As you are using pop you may need to set up your mail client to leave a copy of your mail on the server. This may explain why you don't see any messages when logging on to O2's web mail service.

Are you saying you have two different @o2.co.uk addresses?

      Re: Remote access of emails

I would highly recommend that you sign up to a new provider, redirect all your emails from O2 there and use the new service instead.

Where you have people that you'd like to continue to stay in contact with, email them with the new address and slowly everyone will stop using the O2 address.

Any sites that use your O2 email address should also be updated so that they too will stay in contact with you.

Which provider you switch to is your choice.

The free Sky email is for life, providing that you check the email account at least once every 180 days. I can't see Sky closing down at this time.

Yahoo!/rocketmail, Hotmail/Live/Outlook & googlemail/gmail are all popular services. Each has their own quirks, but have all been around for a while now. After various hacking attempts, they have also all added stronger security measure to prevent hackers from gaining access to or taking over your email account.

Effectively, that appears to be the case. I have an o2 account in my name which I can use to access my phone data etc via "my o2". However, this is for my phone, not my emails - and gives me access to Webmail but not to the o2 server where my emails are stored. My emails operate via a completely different email address.

I appreciate Scubbie's suggestion, but it really shouldn't be necessary and the disadvantage is that I will need to tell everyone I've changed. My emails work OK, and I can even access them via my phone. It should not be beyond the wit of man to tell me what the URL is that permits me to access them remotely. I know it can be done, because it was set up to work on my previous laptop - now sadly deceased.

      Re: Remote access of emails

The reason for my advice isn't strictly because it is difficult to access your emails at the present time, but with further changes on the horizon it may become impossible to access them in the future.

Whilst I am sure that you are happy with your current mobile provider, things are changing as the same company who owns Three also bought O2 Mobile. That is going ahead and no one outside the management circle is going to know what is happening to services such as your email.

By taking the bull by the horns now and changing your email to another provider, you should be in a safer position. It also means that should you wish to change to another mobile provider that you'll not be worried about telling everyone that your old email account is closed and that you can't access it.
